Show national education week november ath to november 7 to november 13 is called american education week for many years we have discussed various phases of education as particularly related to schools we have asked for better equipment better facilities of all kinds better trained teachers we have been compelled to battle with a tide of despotism threatening the cause of human freedom with catastrophe in its assaults upon mankind totalitarianism in its several forms has proved terrifyingly effective in its organization of a disciplined party it assassinated any opponent it exacted unquestioned obedience and loyalty it appe appealed alea to heroism and idealism of youth but directed those noble dispositions of youth to overthrow freedom and free institutions and substituted regimes of violence it cultivated hatred toward class race religion it enthroned power it exploited the processes and virtues of democracy free speech press assemblage tolerance fairness honesty and at the same time bitterly fought for the right to employ these liberties to defend tyrannies tyrannizes tyr annies of their favorite dictators abroad and for suppression at home education in america today must combat the two opposing philosophies of life in spite of the seeming victory of the allies this is is the task of the schools but also of leaders in other fields we have made progress but we are still fighting for inalienable human rights that develop through education in schools and out A greater measure of equality and security in economic conditions and opportunity must be established only as the american people strive honestly and effectively to bring the he facts of their life into h harmony armony with their meals ideals will they be able to resist subversive and un American ideologies the general welfare and the longtime long time tune interests of society must be more f ully fully safeguarded american people have often manifested a great devotion to the common good but sometimes they have been too absorbed in their personal interests as shown by our eroded soils too frequent corruption of government ern ment condoning con donini gambling and racketeering in the necessities of life the indifference of individuals willing to devote themselves to public service the leaders of free societies must fashion a program commensurate with the needs educationally and socially to con erve and advance the cause of true democracy america takes schools for granted we see improvements made as time goes on and like to contrast the schools of today with those of earlier times we point with pride in utah to the secondary school law of keeping children in school up to eighteen years or until graduated from high school we are happy and grateful for betterment and development but our secondary schools need expansion pan sion every parent knows the common place axiom that a busy happy child is out of mischief we need courses in our high schools that appeal to boys and girls from the standpoint of lifework life work our shops and agriculture departments are doing excellent work but they need to be expanded into many and various phases of the skills needed in future employments we need greater equipment more varied departments larger school plants that would attract many youths who are indifferent to courses provided now teachers and parents with faith and courage and the power to go forward into a better day for the advancement of education and the welfare of children must work for federal aid for education without federal control for equalling equalizing educational opportunity keep boys and girls in school until they complete high school by giving them the chance to acquire skills that will aid in their future employment and that in many instances will help very materially la in counteracting er juvenile delinquency with a happy trained skill skillful fui common people we need not fear too much moral delinquency or a despotic power |
