Marys vale after the ari ival of the pioneers 11 in utah were john D lee who in ili 1852 along with john 0 L smith john steele steela john dart solomon chamberlain priddy meeks and F F whitney enter ed sevier valley and followed southward over tho the divide and passed into long valley priddy meeks to later become the first settler in long valley then in 1856 18 66 george A smith and sylvester smith on their way to points south camped on ping pine creek now known as bullion at the present site of marksville marysvale Marys vale ville the sparkling creek fringed with tall pines and an abundance or shade afforded a pleasant camping spot and caused them to call it Merr merryville later changed to marysvale Marys vale rumor humor has it that tho the town was named after brigham youngs young s wife mary who was supposed eup posed to have lost her yell veil here but tho the former seems most likely the next of which we have any record was a man named hewitt who served with the mormon battalion of 1848 and witnessed tho the gold rush of 1849 in california upon passing through here some fifteen years later lie he was astounded at tho tha likeness of the tushar range to nevada of 0 california with what crude implements lie he had he did some prospecting in the vicinity of pine creek and made what was probably the first discovery of gold in utah in january of 1865 lieutenant jacob hess of mantl manti found placer gold on the bench to the south of and adjoining marys yale vale hess was present in california when members of the mormon battalion found gold in ili Sut lers mill race but the gold at marysvale Marys vale was too widely diffused tor for the primitive methods of extraction in those early days he was determined to find the source of this gold so he traced it up pine canyon and some five miles up found the great ledge known as the bully boy and webster however jacob hess was not alone to in Marys valo at this time the first settlers to come and remain to build homes and home hoine stead the land were a small group from sanpete county who had been living in white pine nevada they came to monroe la in sevier county where some of them stayed to become early settlers there there were eight teams in the group that came on to settle marysvale Marys vale some of there were A J Ml IlIck alba deau dean prank frank king robert jackson I 1 and william rudd marksville marysvale Marys vale ville virtually had its beginning with the discovery of gold here during the several years after the discovery of tho the first lode in pine canyon the news of it spread rapidly and this locality was the scene ol 01 much prospecting the ore was gold silver lead and copper and was usually of a high grade in the spring of 1869 some bome miners came to marysvale Marys vale and located in pine canyon at the place known as bullion olty among this group were D 0 tate phil bouchette couchette Cou Gou chette cliette E edward dward folsy fred hamel absolone Ab blanchette and aad many others statistics show us that in 1870 the entire population of oe the county was just 82 and that all or of these were living at bullion city that in 1880 the population of bullion city lad had grown t to 0 1651 ten years later it had dropped to As soon as the railroad was completed into utah in 1869 a two stamp mill and donkey en glue gine were imported 11 by y a chicago company and installed at bullion city As there was no road at that time the machinery was taken in over beecher hill an old drag road can still be seen later that year II 11 D 0 tate and others built a a road up tile the can yon and constructed a toll gate near the place where the marys yale vale town water system emerges this building was later moved to bullion city and in 1871 to webster flat where it still stands on the old desert property the mill prove very successful as the method ot crushing was slow an effort effort was then made to smelt the ore A small homemade home interesting and I 1 picture esque history than has marys vale which was the outgrowth of bullion city it if one were to relate merely the incidents that happened it would be to inadequate bullion city practically became a boom town in over night ight it was destined to be another bingham canyon maybe it was a little wild in those days but like any young thing its heart was light and gay the dreams the hopes and desires of 0 those who lived there were perhaps 9 a little brighter and why not they practically hold held wealth and prosperity in the palm palin of their hands records show that bullion city was not intended by th those oss early miners to be just a boom town every foot of ground was carefully platted in lots and complete records were kept ot of each along with duly recorded location notices of mining claims even today after some 78 years one can see in the canyon markers er showing where 11 the ground was waa platted where a cabin stood or someone had made a dugout their place of abode almost the first thing they d did d was to organize a county probate judge joseph 11 wing proceeded to organize the county of plute territory of utah at bullion city on april abill 1869 by appointing R N den sennet frederick P nelson and august nelson selectman and administered to them tile tho oath of office the selectmen then proceeded to appoint the following county to wit Wil william liani T dennis probate clerk cleric j john L ivle ivie sheriff sherif william T dennis county recorder william za county surveyor niels anderson was appointed coborn er william zabriskie prosecuting attorney tile the county clerk then appointed william ashton justice of the peace tor for said precinct and andrew constable records show that in less than two years 1873 and 1874 pluto plute county h had ad four sheriffs all of those these residing in ili billion city the first of these was F C murray in ili 1873 in 1871 sydney warning was sheriff he wall waa asked to resign and jared taylor was made sheriff then at the election of august 3 1874 robert jackson was elected sheriff the old jail walls a symbol of law enforcement are still standing in ili bullion city wriley porter ot of mantl then a mere boy lived there and helped make tile adobe with which the building was built many are the stories that have been told of 0 those early days they have been passed on from generation to generation until and fragmentary there Is the today they are almost obscure story about kate lee tile the young cherokee indian maiden who wl hiis Is left by some indians charles phillip dutson took her in and raised her and when his own wife w ife died he married her to this union was born one son charles dutson on oil january 13 1872 he Is thought to be the th e first child born at bullion city diaries charles dutson sr was killed shortly afterwards while coming coining down the canyon on a load of poles and was burled in the canyon perhaps no one person played a more important part in early day mining than did D C tate ile he was mining recorder and anc secretary for the ohio mining district for many years he located the morning star and the desert mining claims in bullion canyon mr tate Is credited with being one 0 of f the first school teachers in sacramento california and just previous to coming to marysvale Marys vale had located the old telegraph mine aline known as the highland boy in bingham canyon ile he was also school trustee here for several years records d s show that james A starks who also came to marys vale at an all early date received of D M allson of marys marya vile ale it was for them that the sargent mountains were named in 1878 the deer trail mine was ft as discovered by joseph smith while hunting deer about six miles southwest of marysvale Mans Marys vale for a few years this mine waa a 1 high producer and Is thought by many to be one of the largest and richest in the state the wedge and the dilton dalton are others which created create a sensations in min ing circles and at one time were perhaps the richest in the state ore taken out of these mines w went e n t as much as aa 00 in gold and large nuggets are still preserved by many as souvenirs the annie laurie and the sevier mines were discovered some time later and were both high producers after that first excitement was over in bullion canyon and it became apparent that the mining business was a long slow game most of those old miners left however a number moved into I 1 the valley took up land anci ana 1 built homes among these were I 1 edward folsy frederick hamel blanchette nian chette william T dennis r F 0 murray and many others I 1 old timers today talk of tho the seven bevel lights these were from the homes of frederick hamel edward edvard folsy james A
