Show conservation Conserva bon 1 notes by by W earl in his address at the opening session of the soil conservation society of 0 america in chicago december 12 dr byrd president of the university of maryland made some interesting statements regarding the world food problem pio blem he states in part that it la Is not farfetched far fetched to consider that we shall have more people than our land can feed I 1 am told that the awful poverty in japan and china today rests upon this factor recently I 1 had a letter from my daughter in which was the following sentence until the tha ship docked at japan they put garbage cans over the side and I 1 saw hundreds of people literally tight fight to get at those garbage cans tor for food I 1 never know knew what poverty meant china I 1 understand has starving millions entirely because such a small portion of its lands are under cultivation japan reached out tor for more land in order to feed its millions japan was thwarted but it la Is inevitable that millions must be fed because when people are starving they will do anything for food we do not want depleted lands in this nation to develop such a condition here and we want our government to continue in its present form no nation no people ever flourished s since ince the beginning of recorded history after food and vital necessities begin to disappear then it is those who control food stuffs distribution become rulers it if that time comes our people no longer will ie be tree free russia calls it communism italy called it fascism germany called it nazism we may call it regimentation but whatever it may be it if this condition comes to pass it will not be democracy as we understand it you agree with me I 1 know that we do not want our soil resources to vanish whether it be through over cultivation through failure to return to the soil mia minerals which plants take from the soil or whether it be through soil erosion or any other reason we cannot countenance depletion of our soil unless at the same time we countenance the destruction st of those factors that are basic in our national life we cannot maintain a high living standard it our productive lauds lands are allowed to disappear while at the same bame time our people become more nume numerous roue |
