Show change in plan Is heend seend seen by educational r J expert new ew courses planned for this year at Brig hain young university the nation Is looking to the colleges tor for military and technical leadership dr di franklin S harris president of brigham young university declared recently while making studies ot of the part pait ol of higher learning can play in the war As an example he cited the quota of 02 reserve officers enlistments which the ninth area commandant allotted to 13 Y U in the new program to provide thoroughly trained officers tor for army navy marines and coash coast guard significantly the college may he hse the curriculum except for recommendations of mathe ma matles physics and physical education for this reserve officers corps dr harris observed this indicates how military leaders value college education as such in developing ve the ability to act and lead quickly and wisely la in crita critical situations the national crisis demands that most men of effective age without dependents must be mobilized tor for some aspect of the war effort dr harris said young men mei ana and women romen of college caliber berwill will best beit serve the nation by getting as much specialized college work as before going into military service or war industry war Is causing colleges to ch change ange rapidly he said A major trend Is toward a shorter more intensive college course this Is achieved by reducing vacations so that students go to all year round and by cutting out frills A new emphasis Is placed on health and physical education mathematics ply physical and biological science bu business cluess and specific was courses those trends are reflected at BYU by the all year schedule day and night classes in business 1 primary and s secondary econ dary civil pilot training and other work heavy enrollment in these war coir courses ses Is expected when autumn regi begins september 26 25 |
