Show century old adventurer recalls gold rush days ST LOUIS james M shuey pi pioneer 10 gold miner has safely passed the century mark but he be s says I 1 Ys he cant remember r worrying about anything since the time he and his father ran out of grub dur during ing the gold rush of 49 im never sick feel fine never felt better he said not so strong a as s he was 80 years ago however he spends a good deal of his time lying down in 49 he says his family moved west with other gold seekers dad took a fool notion to ge get t r rich ich and we pulled up tip stakes and s started to california in a covered w wagon agon he said that was some trip we got as far as salt lake city and dad started digging the ground was hard and the gold was deep and we got only a goose quill full dad sold it for I 1 food 00 d and we started back east yep it was an interesting tr trip ip all right he recalled all across the plains wed run into indians ride their ponies along even w with ith the wagon train but they kept a good distance away hear the music sometimes and creep up to the camp campfires fires and just sit there out of the light they were good indians and never gave us any trouble dad brought us to missouri and we settled down in franklin county along fiddle creek I 1 remember c crossing the missouri river because we had a little bulldog and he W ou get in the boat he almost bit dads thumb off and we had to leave him shuey bays he married only once to a girl off fiddle creek name of reid she was 15 when we married a fine girl he moved to st louis 35 years ago and went to work for the railroads he carried mall mail and worked as a section hand but says he remember as much about that as he does about the fam ilys migration to the west and back again three of 13 children are still living he has 12 grandchildren seven great grandchildren and a great great granddaughter my sight been any good tor for the last six years and im not able to see lem em he said but I 1 know their voices and ill probably outlive the whole lot |
