its also literally true that some of these portraits have never before been reproduced in this form up until the time this new series was issued twelve of our presidents have been denied the honor of having their portraits on our postage stamps they were john adams john quincy adams martin van buren william henry harrison john tyler james K polk millard fillmore franklin pierce james buchanan andrew johnson chester alan arthur and calvin coolidge all of the others george washington thomas jefferson james madison james monroe andrew jackson zachary taylor abraham lincoln ulysses S grant rutherford B hayes i james A garfield grover I 1 cleveland benjamin harrison william mckin ley theodore roosevelt william howard taft woodrow wilson and warren G harding had appeared on stamp issues at one time or another the same was true of such statesmen a s A alexander I 1 e x a n d e r hamilton henry clay daniel webster william H HS seward eward john marshal robert livingston and edwin MS M stanton tanton such military and naval heroes as winfield scott oliver hazard perry william tecumseh sherman r david G Farra gilt and nathan hale hal and such his figures fig as christopher columbus balboa capt john smith an and john ericson but B u t these 12 presidents were forgotten r deniso faras far as their portraits tr aitson on stamps was concerned the same expanding postal needs which had brought prominent americans into our stamp gallery in ili past years made it necessary to t 0 find some more americans worthy of this honor so early this year postmaster general parley farley that there was to be a general revision of our stamp issues Issue si or ar ranging the presidents in their chronological order in addition to the 29 former presidents thus honored there is another of course herbert hoover but he Is ineligible for a place in the stamp gallery so long as bue he is living two other notables 9 not presidents are retained in the new series they are benjamin franklin I 1 father of the arn american postal system and martha washington the first woman whose portrait appeared on one of our stamps in fact the new series i begins with these two fia franklin who has always appeared on the one cent stamp Is now on the one half cent Is sue instead of nathan 11 hale a I 1 e ind and M martha a r t h i washington replaces rel l G herding harding onah on the izone one and warren arren ones one half cent stamp thereas there is also alsae a 4 cent stamp which shows I 1 the white house the home of our our presidents arranging the he presidents chronologically has resulted in some noticeable shifts 9 likeness likeness h has a s be been en on both the two cent and the three cent stamps in past years he will now appear only on the one cent replacing ag benjamin franklin and yielding his place on the red two center to john adams ami and on the purple three center to thomas jefferson aa since S I 1 n c e americans spend more than for postage every year and nearly half of this sum goes for two cent and three cent stamps its likely that they are going to be more familiar with the if looks of their second and third presidents P r e s id e n ts john adams a and n d thomas jefferson jeff erson than they have ever been before it is to be hoped that millard fillmore was nota not a supers superstitious titi IOUs man else it might have given him some uncomfortable moments it if he 2 could have foreseen 4 that his 1 1 portrait would appear on the 13 cent stamp 1 it will be noticed that there t ere is no 23 cent stamp not because of any superstition in regard to that number or any desire to avoid perpetuation of the 23 tradition grover cleveland who W ho appears on the 22 cent c e n t stamp served two terms in the white house but they were not consecutive he was defeated d by benjamin harrison who served one th then en staged a comeback come bachand back and was elected for another four year term so it seemed the logical thing to place ti his hf s portrait with I 1 the dates of his 04 two terms on the t b e 22 cent c e n t stamp and place harrison on the 24 cent issue I 1 in addition to being the year of the new presidential series of stamps
