Show news from the office of the county agent mr hobson of the state board of agriculture mr pitts and mr thompson of the head bead office met at the county seat on tuesday to work out a program on the control of noxious weeds in piute diute county besides these men from the head office W J luke of the county commissioners barlo T luke of the crop improvement association H W gore core district inspector lloyd R hunsaker county counti agent and voyle L bagley of the soil conservation committee were present mr hobson reported that the would provide men and that it if there were no men in the county eligible to work there would be no money spent in this county he thought it would probably be necessary to shave other projects maybe close one or more down it 9 the weed project goes over the responsibility of this will rest on the commissioners the ditch companies the state and other functioning public agencies the work this year will be confined to public property to receive payment under the soil conservation program requires that one must use pure seed in order to qualify all loaning agen cles cies have ceased loaning to owners of weed infested property people are determined to stop traffic where noxious weeds are grown seed Is being quarantined agriculture Is being hampered because of infestation of noxious weeds values of land going down and much property Is going into the hands of the county for delinquent taxes and is going off the tax rolls it Is better to light weeds now while they are scarce rather than let them go until it costs millions to clean the county of weeds mr thompson reported that there were 1300 certified men in plute county wl m need of employment and that men will be all that will be needed to counteract weeds but that the lack of money makes it expedient that they hire only 60 to 70 per cent and that there Is nothing definite after july auly 1 unless more money is appropriated in discussing the desirability of working with other counties they reported that mr jessen said that noxious weeds are a public menace and county lines must not in ter er fere the will not pay for teams that is up to the commissioners and other agencies money Is available for one purpose to make work that is the important thing it is hoped to get this work started by may 6 sooner if possible in order to make as complete a kill as possible the experiment station found that by beginning cultivation early in the spring as soon as the weed was discernable discernible discern able and continuing it 11 every 14 days day throughout the year that a per cent kill could be expected during the week of april 19 to 24 a rodent drive will be conducted in piute diute county under the supervision of the county agent and district crop inspector with special emphasis on exterminating gophers central mixing stations will be established in each community farmers anners will be invited to participate by furnishing their own carrots bringing them to the mixing station where they will be poisoned demonstrations on setting balt bait will also be given every farmer is urged to attend and take advantage of this opportunity to rid his field of these pests A number of farmery through continuous effort have been successful in keeping their fields free from gophers others have allowed gophers to remain on their farms and destroy crops the loss in the county last year through gophers would amount to several hundred dollars |
