They studied w-.-. AM) I 1 the ways of animals and protected them- ' 1 I I 1 selves from this danger as best they could. ' 0 0 "if 1 ' I Today we face not FEWER dangers than E I 1 ? 1 our ancestors of thousands of years ago 8 1 g I but MORE. These continually mounting - 1 0 O 1 1 dangers are largely covered by one word I 1 I accidents. . I 1 '' I The great inventions that have brought joy, 1 J 1 , happiness and comfort, have also brought a 1 W 1 I multiplication of dangers. Railroads, auto- I I '1 mobiles, aeroplanes, gas, electricity, gaso- I 1 'I 1 line, firearms all of these have increased C I I the possibility of accidents. VA A 1 Inasmuch as we cannot entirely escape from this danger of accidents, it behooves everyone of us to learn how to guard against JfytL Jt 1 them. The first principle of citizenship in our town should be SAFETY FIRST. COX lfrL I The primary duty of any community as well as any government is to make its people sae. Police, fire and health protection are three j w Jj I of the most important functions of any civic government This protection is very limited unlets it has the cooperation of every citizen. Vy YJ 1 Carelessness, neglect and recklessness are the factors that contribute largely to the accidents that continue to occur in the home, store 1 ol 1 and fttory on the farm and highway. Safety first, universally practiced, would eliminate nearly every accident, i fJj W I Traffic accidenU are the principal danger to safety so far as the community is directly concerned. Nearly one-third of all traffic U 1 I accidenU happen to children under 15 years of age. Safety first, practiced by automobile drivers and pedestrians; safety I ' I 1 taught to our children, in the schools, would greatly reduce traffic accidents. i 1 Fire loss is another great safety hazard. At least sixty per cent of all fires are preventable. Fire not only burns property, it stops , I business, throwt people out of employment It causes poverty! Inspect your property for fire hazards and eliminate them; make ' I" property safe for yourself and others. f 1 Fire insurance, while the only reasonable and complete protection against loss by fire, covers only actual financial loss of the property I I burned. Regardless of the insurance carried, it is a duty to one's telf, and one's neighbors, and to the community, to prevent fire. I Failure to provide proper fireproof storage for your perishable good., and .afe depo.it boxes for your valuable!, makes for lack of fety. f 1 Bunk vaults and fireproof storage house, furnish the maximum of safety at a minimum of co.t. I 1 Night and day your police and firemen maintain a vigil to keep you and yours safe. But even with their utmost efforts, your cooperation Is nee- i essary. A community is disgraced by fatal traffic accident, and by excessive fire loss. f I National Safety Week should be 365 days long in our community.
