By OOOOOCXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX3U Although radio conimuiiieutinn Ims been an accomplished fact since the nineties, it is only since broadcasting came 'into use that the great wave of radio popularity lias converted the American public into an army of radio fans. ,Some eight or ten years ago the first broadcast programs went on the air. They were a vastly different kind of entertainment than that which Is tuned-iby t lie radio listener today. A phonograph was rigged up In front of a microphone, and shrill, screechy sounds poured forth. Intermixed with s and tliunde-oucrushes as something went wrong with the apparatus, or tlie microphone was jarred by the sudden movement of the operator in changing a phonograph record. The few weary ship operators who picked up these concerts came out of their lethargy with a sudden snap, and sat up, pressing the receivers to their ears. The air of savlor-falr- e quickly faded from their faces, and their eyes popped forth in surprise. They could not quite make out whether it the voices of angels to which they were listening, or 'a spell cast over them by the devil. A high wind and rain storm also struck in Louisiana, injuring twelve. The Missouri twisters, which swept as faf north as Competition, seventy miles north of the Missouri Arkansas border, were believed to be offshoots of disastrous winds which tooks a heavy toll at Heber Springs Ark. Twenty-ninpersons were known to be dead in Arkansas, with fifty or more injured, while five were killed in Missouri and an undetermined number injured. The heaviest loss of life was at Heber Springs, in Celburne county, where fifteen met death as fifteen blocks of buildings were mowed down. At Oppelo a family was annihilated when a residence was blown away. Eight were killed and thirty injured at Moscow and one death occurred at Sheridan. At Brandsville, Mo., near the border, three were killed and more than twenty Injured. Nearly every business building was destroyed. As these concerts went on from night to night, however, they came to be welcomed, despite their Imperfections. by the ship operators as a pleasing interlude In the monotony of regular duties. Amateur operators, here and there, Impressed their families with the marvels of radio by inviting tliem to hear the canned music, and the general public, hearing rumors of "the wonderful feats performed by tlie new art, began lo be suspicious that it was missing something that something was being kept from It which It had a right to know ubout. The more Inquisitive individuals bought or built crystal sets, and as tlie audience grew, the performers widened their scope of activities, introducing, by way of variation, such novelties as tlie electric piano, or the old ladles choir from the corner church. But matters went from bad to better. Instead of had to worse, and when tlie public awoke in lbil to a sudden realization of the possibilities that radio held forth in the way of enterradio broadcasting was tainment, transformed from a crude experiment to a national service of high standards almost overnight. Tims In outlining the how and why of radio as it is known today, we must study a weed which has grown to maturity In the short space of five years, or rather, a flower which has bloomed overnight. Flood Drowns Fourteen Men San Francisco Fourteen men were drowned at Orlnda, fifteen miles east of Oakland, when the concrete tunnel which they were constructing flooded as the result of a cloudburst which caused a coffer dam to break and send a torrential flood into the tunnel. The men were working on the Mokelumne river aqueduct, which will bring a new water supply to Oakland. They were expected to cross the international boundary line at an early hour. The shipment will be folio w?-others, by an order for thirty-sieither to be purchased from the Douglas Aircraft company or other American plants, according to information here. The utmost secrecy prevailed during the building of the planes as to the identity of the purchasei. This was explained in a semiofficial report to the effect that revolutionists across the border would employ every means to prevent the planes from entering Mexico if they learned of their existence. Colds Headache Neuritis Pain Neuralgia Toothache Material Improvement in New Loud Speakers This "season brings wide topu!arity for tlie cone speaker as a means toward perfect reproduction. However, there are a number of excellent horn-typloud speakers that give splendid reproduction. The general design of loud speakers has certainly been Improved during the last year and one with a good radio set and one of the new speakers should get tone quality that approximates naturalness. With tlie coming of the excellent loud speakers tlie public must take one Important point into consideration before buying. That point Is Does the radio set have tlie material and design to give good reproduction with a good siKaker? This point must tie considered for tlie simple reason that if a good loud speaker Is connected to a set that Is net giving good quality, the result will be a mess of noises that will not ap proaeli jour present reproduction. Tlie 1!l27 loud sieakers are remarkably well designed and are made to cover the entire musicul scale and are also sensitive.
