Show T sir N IN DANGER SIM L r the republican Republic in party or utah Is playing its old game of duplicity with the voters it Is showing one face in the th eppen open and another and different face in secret in plain term terms sit lt Is posing as a champion of 0 prohibition in in the outlying towns of the state and making bargains with the liquor interests in salt lake city listen to the facts in the case on the night of october last a clam supper was given in a cafe in salt lake city there were present between and persons wom women en of the town professional panders gamblers and the baser element of the city generally the gathering did not break up till after 4 in the morning besides these thero mere present A E beveridge candidate for county cleric on the republican ticket joseph E burbidge candidate for Sh sheriff crIff V F X A eblo eble and charles 11 II Bal baldwin divin sr candidates for the legislature and diaries charles 31 31 morris orris chairman of the lie ite publican committee lit in salt lake county these gentlemen were n cro at the mec meeting ting sitting at the table with the others front from about half past one till after three lit in the morning four ot oc these persons the cadi candidates dates made speeches mr beveridge talked at some length mr burbidge slid lie he would give them a square deal mr eblo eble was then introduced and spoke it Is positively known that this thia Is but one of a number of such gatherings recen recently held and that candidates for office on the republican ticket have made speeches at each each 0 of them yesterday afternoon sunday october the liberty league an organization composed of brewery workers and bartender erp held a meeting in eagles hall on west temple and second so streets those present were given sample ballots which they marked as instructed and which they are keeping for election day ono one of these marked ballots Is in the po possession poses session slon of the state democratic committee on tills ballot the names of simon Ban boniberger iberger and W V JIL 11 king hing tire arc scratched and a cross is put after those of nephi L morris ond and george sutherland the underworld in salt lake city is being rounded up for mr morris prostitutes and gamblers are being intimidated to work and vote for mr morris one day recently there were some cards in the street cars of salt lake city asking the people to vote for morris and Pro prohibition libi the next day they were removed in obedience to a request from the royal arch an association of saloon men in the town according to an agreement between tile the republican party and ohp greater utah business league which is is merely the brewers association this latter organization is to declare in favor of mr bamberger Bamberg cr in the country so as to throb prohibition votes to morris and at the same time to declare for morris in order to capture the liquor votes for him this is to be done through marked ballots and letters sent to its members such is the face which the republican party is showing the saloons and dives of salt lake city a face reddened by drink and coarsened nightly carousals but in the country towns towns the party exhibits quite another countenance there it uses cosmetics freely it speaks with an oily tongue it assumes a pious air its main theme is prohibition how nephi L morris has made a long fight for the principle how he is the prohibition candidate preeminently pre eminently while its cards declaring for prohibition are torn down in the liquor districts they blare out their hypocritical message in the country undisturbed in the moral communities its workers promise prohibition within six months in the city districts they promise a postponement of liquor legislation and when it comes compensation pensa tion at the taxpayers expense the breweries and the saloon fixtures are to be bought with the taxpayers money and when they are ask whether they can deliver the goods they answer have we not done so in the past have we not delayed prohibition in utah in the face of a popular demand for it we said that governor spry would veto a prohibition bill and he did we promised an open town if mont ferry were elected and salt lake is now an open to town wn and this reasoning brings the saloon v vote ote now will the people of utah stand for this double dealing will they put into power once more a party that has over and over again turned their dearest hopes into ashes that has defeated them I 1 on every turn of the road to adopt an old saying if a party fools you once shame on it if it fools you twice shame on you but if it fools you time and again what shall we say |
