believed such was the case when more than members of the church flocked into the tabernacle to hear bear the keynote address de delivered elverea by president joseph F smith at the eighty sixth semiannual semi annual conference of th the e church of jesus christ of latter day saints pleas by president smith for greater activity in the work of the church both on oil ahe part of stake and ward officers and among the members member of tild the church and exhortations to mormons cormons in general to be guided by a sp spirit irit of brotherly love and settle differences that thai members sometimes take before church and civil courts were thelea the features of tile the opening session with but two exceptions the general authorities of the church were present for the conference george F richards one of the twelve apontes apost es of the church who Is in liverpool presiding over the vast european mis mission and young one of the first seven presidents of seventies ft ho was unavoidably detained elsewhere were the only two absentees president smith delivered theolen the opening address and anthon H lund first counsellor was the only other speaker at the morning session president of the twelve apostles and apostle heber J grant speak at the afternoon session president smith exhorted his audience to greater interest in the activities of the church and spoke regretfully of the tendency of many of the members of the faith and anddie he referred particularly to the bishopric to io step down and piss pass their duties along to others lie he chided the bishops tor for what he likened to carelessness izi in fat falling to gain a better knowledge of the personalities of their cli charges arges and declared that members of the church should strive to settle whatever differences feren ces that might arise between them without recourse to either church or civil courts president lunds bunds talk urged a great er and more regular attendance at church bear to the divinity furnished the theme of the principal address at al the afternoon session delivered by charles W penrose second counsellor of the first presidency of the church president penrose emphasized his conviction that joseph smith was a prophet of the living rig god adding that in his belief belet he was vas one of the mighty referred to lu in holy scriptures as reserved to of his address he decried the fact that many of the members of the priesthood believe that their work is not of muc much h importance and declared that no wor work k in the church could be considered more or less important than another the music as usual was one of the enjoyable features of the ton conference ference at the morning session on sunday october 8 it was necessary to hold overflow meetings present day extravagances both by individuals and by the governing bodies of cities states and nation and the seeming tendency of members of the church to take part in sunday amusements and card playing furnished themes of addresses delivered by apostles anthony W ivins joseph F smith jr and james E talmage war was another topic touched on by apostle ivins in my travels he said 1 I met men who advocated war they told me that our national dignity had been injured and they demanded in return that the guilty be humiliated the only redress they could see was the humiliation of the other
