Show A dallas garder Mu stories of the greatest cases in the career of thomas furlong the famous railroad detective told by himself copyright Copy richt by W 0 chapman that there ther does really exist a sixth sense cense a sort of instinct which enables the detective to run down his hia quarry the following narrative seems to demonstrate on strate it if this Is not so BO what impulse led me to connect the unknown murderer with the strange young colored woman with the red hair one day early in the tha nineties I 1 received a telegram from james arnold chief ahlet of police of dallas tex and ben cabel the county sheriff requesting me to cometo come to thae thathy city immediately for consultation in a murder case knowing both these gentlemen well I 1 telegraphed back that I 1 would start on on the following day which I 1 did I 1 found the chief of police and the county sheriff waiting for me at the depot and we three drove immediately to a hotel there the nature of the case was explained the names here given being fictitious ones tor for obvious reasons on the night of the preceding sunday a prominent citizen of dallas who may be known as temple had boarded a heavily loaded electric car downtown in front of one of the principal churches chur clies of the city being bound for his homo home the car contained at least forty or fifty passengers most of whom were ivere returning from the evening service in that church at which temple had bad also been present temple lived on the outer edge of the city in a fine residential district when I 1 the car reached his bis house bouse he got off and started toward his front gate As he stepped from the street to the edge of the he sidewalk a a colored man who had been lying in wait behind a tree sprang out and was seen by a number of passengers to strike temple a powerful bloy blon on the head with something resembling a baseball bat after striking one blow the negro dropped his weapon and fled into an alley where he was soon lost to view leaving hla his hat upon the ground those who had witnessed the assault from the rear end of the car hastened to temple who lay unconscious on the sidewalk picked him up and carried him into the tha house the physicians sic ians who were hastily summoned found that temples skull had been fractured and assistance assi was impossible he only lived a few moments never recovering consciousness the weapon which the blow had been inflicted wasa was a piece of one and one halt half inch gas pipe nearly tour four feet long and it had been used so BO violently that the pipe was bent midway to almost a right angle the hat which the mpr murderer derer had dropped was a new cheap broad brimmed black one of unusually large size alze it was in fa fact t too large for any ordinary mans head and for that reason probably it had fallen off when the negro delivered the blow the witnesses of the crime afi all had bad a plain view of the murderer whom they unanimously described as a tall young negro very black well built well dressed and with the features of a white man the lips were thin the nose straight and the general impression was that he be was a white man who had bad blackened his face for the of disguising himself the dead man had a brother a prominent physician ot of springfield ill who had bad been sent for and had bad arrived at dallas two days after the murder the doctor was anxious to have his bis brothers murderer brought to justice and had bad been the moving spirit in the employment of my services next morning the police chief sheriff and myself went over the ground I 1 examined the hat and tho the piece of pipe which the murderer had used the tha pipe was now and had been cut from the end of a long joint evidently tor for the special use to which it bad been put so that the assassin could conceal it in carrying it to the place where he be lay in wait tor for his bis victim there was a large colony of negroes in dallas as in most other texas towns but nobody seemed to know anything of a negro with the features of a white man all the witnesses of the murder agreed that they had nev cr seen anyone before who looked at all like the murderer since every crime has its motive I 1 began by investigating any possible cause for the homicide mr temple I 1 discovered had bad been the superintendent of a sunday school ho he was in the wholesale lumber business and was associated with two gentlemen who may be known as smith and perry when the partnership was formed each had taken out outa a ten thousand dollar life insurance policy on the life of 0 one of hla his partners which were carri carried edon on the companas comp anys funds temple I 1 learned further had incurred the enmity of a number of citizens among them being a brother inlaw in law who had been heard beard to threaten his life temple bad had so some me litigation with the proprietor ot of a saw mill who lived in the eastern part of the state of texas the litigation which involved the sum of some fifty thousand dollars had been in court tor fo several years but a short time before the murder a decision had been rendered in temples favor the sawmill proprietor had the reputation of f being a good citizen honorable and reliable in business affairs but had bad killed two or more people during the course of his life having been exonerated by the courts on each occasion it was clear therefore that there might have been several motives for the commission of the crime now comes the strange part of my narrative at noon on the second day after my arrival at dallas having eaten my dinner and walked out of the hotel where I 1 was staying I 1 stood still for a moment on the sidewalk being undecided as to which direction I 1 intended to take As I 1 stood there I 1 saw a fine looking young woman coming across the street toward me As she approached I 1 perceived that although as white as myself she was yet colored only the negro blood showed itself in te tafe contour of the features instead of df in the pigmentation her hair was airly arly and deep red her eyes were blue her carriage graceful she might have passed for a a beauty but tor for the kinky hair and a number of large brown freckles upon her face As I 1 stood watching her a hand was laid upon my shoulder and I 1 looked round to perceive percele pr dr temple standing at my side what do you think of her inquired the doctor she Is a freak of nature I 1 answered yes replied the other her yesterday in that building where my brother had his bis office she appeared to bo be having an earnest c conversation with the janitor now there was na no reason why the fact that the dead man bad had bad his office in the building velch the young woman visited should in any way implicate her in or connect her with the crime nevertheless I 1 could not get her out of my mind the doctor took his departure and I 1 strolled on thoughtfully before I 1 had bad gone a block the conviction that I 1 had bad obtained a clue became so overwhelming that I 1 decided to find out who the young woman was and what her business with the janitor had been sheriff cabel knew everyone in dallas and I 1 turned round and went back back to the courthouse where I 1 found him sheriff I 1 said 1 I saw a colored girl near the hotel a short time ago and I 1 would like to know who she Is and something about her I 1 then described the woman that girl la Is known as liza johnson answered the sheriff you know emma johnson well she Is the daughter of an old colored woman who lived with emma johnson tor for many years her mother died when she was a child and emma raised her as though she were her own daughter E emma mma thinks a good deal of her and can tell you all about her so BO it if you would like me to I 1 will take you over to see bee her on my assenting the sheriff took me to miss johnsons house bouse where the sheriff introduced me stating ting that I 1 was a friend of his 1 I want to know something about your maid liza I 1 said 1 I understand that she has been seen in an office building over on commerce street t et arid and I 1 am anxious to learn what tt business took her there why I 1 really dont know but I 1 reckon I 1 can find out answered miss johnson about a month ago the negroes here in dallas had a picnic and liza went to that picnic she met a young there and he brought her home I 1 saw him and he was good looking well dressed and appeared to be fairly well educated he was as black as ink but he be had good features like those of a white man he had thin lips a small mouth and a straight nose if he had been a white nan man he would have been good looking this was an exact description of the slayer of mr temple he came here from some place in the state continued miss job johnson n a v n he Is a stranger here and does not mix with the other colored people ile he Is ia acting as a sort of body servant to his master who has an office in that building on an commerce street what is his bis name I 1 inquired his first name is john replied miss johnson and his last name Is the same as his bis masters which I 1 cannot at present recall was his bis masters name perry yes that Is it john perry but john Is not in town now lie he left last monday he came over and saw liza and told her be was going to th the e rades races at san antonio there this week he writes to her every day and she got a letter from him this ni morning orning can you lehme let me see the letter without lizas knowledge I 1 asked 0 yes replied the lady 1 T I will send liza over to the drug store on an errand and I 1 can get it for you bej bei be i j fore ore she returns she sent cent liza to the drug store and got the letter which she ahe handed to me ita had been mailed the day before from san an the rest of the word was not apparent because tle the mailing stamp had not touched the paper completely there seemed now no doubt but that the murderer had been found and that th at he was at san antonio having elicited cited a promise of secrecy from miss johnson I 1 next proceeded to the plumbing shop where I 1 had reason to believe the pipe had been bought the brother of the proprietor a boy of eighteen at once recognized the piece of pipe which be said he be had cut from a large joint tor for the negro the friday before the murder he described the man as fully as miss johnson h had d done and said that he could identify him on sight eight I 1 immediately arranged for the young fellow to accompany me to san ban antonio at my expense agreeing to recompense him for hla his time the boy got ready and wo we left for sari san antonio arriving there the next morning while breakfasting at the hotel a te telegram legran was brought me it was from sheriff cabel and read go to san angelo tex at once before leaving for san antonio I 1 had arranged that the sheriff should examine all letters received by the maid with the result that on that morning one had arrived with the san angelo postmark plainly stamped on it we accordingly took the next train for that point arriving on the following morning sunday just a week after the murder of mr temple san angelo was a small cattle ship ping town within an hour after our arrival I 1 had been able to ascertain that the negro john perry ferry had bad left on the saturday evening for lampasas tex on the following morning we arrived at that point lampasas Lampa was the county seat and it was court week the town was filled to overflowing we walked to the hotel and on nearing the post postoffice office saw a largo large crowd waiting for the distribution of the mall mail the young fellow who was wael with me called my attention to a colored man standing apart from the crowd and evidently waiting for a letter the I 1 sold cold that piece of pipe to he said bald it was john perry I 1 told the boy to stay where he was until the negro had been arrested and then to follow quietly to the jail I 1 approached the negro but then decided to wait until he had received his letter in a few moments the negroes in the crowd began lining up in front man his pocket knife through the bars and perry stepping back opened it and cut his throat before the jailer could get into the cell tile the man had cut the windpipe wind pipe in two but he be had bad riot severed the jugular vein an old physician who was summoned looked at the prisoner why that will die I 1 cant do a thing for him he said he refused to sew up the wound but finally a younger man was found who ger performed formed the operation I 1 myself holding perry meanwhile and stated that with proper care the man would live about the middle of that afternoon perry admitted to mo me that his young master john perry had induced him to go to dallas for the purpose of killing his partner mr temple he said that his hla master had paid his expenses and had furnished furbish ed him liberally with money promising also to give him five hundred dollars more after the murder he said he had not wanted to do it and had tried to hack back out of the agreement after affet reaching dallas but R 44 e lo 10 WE STARTED FOR THE JAIL THROUGH AN ANGRY MOB of the postoffice post office window john perry received a letter ho he left the line at once aad walked around a corner of the bulling buff ling opened the envelope and extrait ex traced d a couple ot of bills which he placed in his vest pocket meanwhile I 1 had approached him unobserved and os cis the man looked up from the letter i ho he was reading he saw a 44 calibre colt revolver pointing at his bis heiti he tried to draw a revolver from his pocket but seeing that he was covered hesitated meanwhile a crowd had quickly gathered and a tall thin man drew a colt on both of us and with a voice as shrill as that of bf a wild goose yelled 1 I am the sheriff of this county and I 1 command peace mr sheriff I 1 am an officer from dallas and have arrested this ii negro agro tor for murdering a white miia man there dir e take hold bold of himl him I 1 replied the sheriff grasped the by one arm and I 1 bythe by the other and we started for or the jail through an angry mob which hearing bearing that the negro was arrested for the murder of a white man threatened a lynching lunching lyn ching the tho sheriff dissuaded them however promising that the negro should be dealt with by process of law at the jail the man was searched and the letter was taken I 1 jerom from him together with the two bills which proved to be of the value of fifty dollars apiece the letter had been torn but I 1 quickly pieced the fragments together and read as aa follows 1 I enclose you one hundred dollars on receipt of which you must go quietly and at once to the city of mexico alexice I 1 will join you there detectives are onto auto us and you must not let them catch you it would be fatal john perry I 1 instructed the sheriff to feed the pr ioner but not to allow him a knife or any other implement with which he could do himself bodal bodily harm I 1 explained that it was essential that the negro should be brought back to dallas ta in safety in order that a statement might be obtained from him as to why he bad killed temple I 1 was eating my dinner when a deputy sheriff rushed into the room calling my name come to the jail at once he said that of yours has haa cut his damned head nearly off As soon ns aa I 1 had departed the prisoner had called the jailer and told him that he had a sliver in his finger asking him to lend him his knife to remove IV it the old jailer offered the that his master had threatened to kill him film unless he did so EO and that through fear of him he be had killed hilled temple he ha said that on oa the sunday night previous to that on which the murder occurred lie he was about to pounce upon another man of temples congregation who closely resembled him and that lie would have done dona so had bad not rushed out from the place where ho he was concealed and prevented his making the mistake it was waa essential to lay hands bands at once oft on |
