the sandstone witha with a thick hod bed of limestone at the close of the lower carboniferous w a gentle upward movement occurred and to tho area under discussion rose above the surface of 0 the ocean where it remained during the enormous lapse of 0 time that intervened between tho the closing of the lower loer carboniferous and well lal along ong towards the close of the Tertia age whon when an almost worldwide world wide change of level occurred along the east side of and parallel with ith what is now known as the mt baldy range and its northern prolongation the range the earths crust was fissured from the surface down to the region of molten rock the fissuring suring ns was succeeded by faulting and an idea of the tremendous placement displacement dis m may a y be formed from the statement that door trail peak the ahlm highest elevation of quartzite is fully feet higher than tho valley while the eastern section of the quartzite is buried beneath hundreds of feet of basalt and other eruptive material the displacement extended northerly a dist distance ance of nearly miles in sevier valley the sandstone so conspicuous along the enst side of the mountains is on the east side of the valley buried under hun tion flon material this stupendous displace ment Is known as the sevier fault in the vicinity of marysvale Marys valo vale a great fissure on the cast paralleled the savior fault and is now marked by a fringe of basaltic foothills and volcanic activity must have continued over a long period after comparative guiot reigned along the mt baldy range rane the evidences of which are found in the mixture of volcanic bombs and debris in a belt of oolite bullion illion canyon represents a lateral fault extending westerly from the sevier fault apex of the divide between two mile and bullion is quartzite and is fully 1500 1500 foot feet higher than the quartzite to the north of bullion creek another area araa of stupendous displacement exists exist new fissures formed in tho ovel overly cyina lne eruptive mass and 0 great dykes of highly mineralized erali zed porphyry now mark the location and direction of many of those ancient rents through the es into quartzite asat as it nears the igneous formations f or mat ions A the brief period of comparative quiet A a which succeeded the previous disturbances was broken by another uplift of the range lange and along ion the central portion extends extending irom from gold mountain south a distance boffl of some ten miles a great fissure was formed f horn bolm tho the surface surf ace down to the region of liquid firo fire the mig mighty aty force which split the northern portion of the mt bit baldy range also formed lateral fissures extending easterly and westerly from the great central rent those fissures became lines lilies of easement for tho the vast mass of magra magma seeking egress oress and froim molten depths dept lis hot gaseous mud flowed upward and formed great dykes of phonolite which today cheerily clinks dundei the teet feet of an occasional prospector while the eruption of i tho the phonolite marks the last throes of nature in the mt it baldy region subsequent of tho the phonolite occurred and in connection with other fissures already formed became channels channel for the upward and lateral flow of gold and silver bearing solutions extinct craters fields of dark colored colore dr 1 tra chite ridges of volcanic breccia dykes s and chimneys of obsidian in the phonolite prove that local volcanic forces were continued over a ion long period after the wide i spread eruptive activity hail had ceased the readers attention is now now directed j more particularly to the topographical andl cross see section tion maps while we investigate the isy of dynan dy nan cicali forces just busl described to avoid confusion the great porphyry dykes only have been mapped and the veins along the trend of those dykes are v prominently drawn ft p the cross section ago yielded a large quantity of hi high h grade mer curial ore the origin of which js is an un solved problem still higher on the mountain side le is sit the once famous pluto like elke the lucky luchy boy it proved to be a surface deposit in limestone the ore was alnio almost st pure silver and with no visible reason its presence in a locality where conditions are snuggly so unfavorable the first great porphyry dyke that tra verses almost the entire district occurs about three miles west from the mouth of 0 cottonwood canyon and occupies the great northerly and southerly fault line albang this dyke is situated the nelson a velb of gold bearing quartz that projects ts above the ground like iffie a great wall the branch vein is strong string and its permanency has been proven present apex of the range through gold mountain and onward to tho the north into the Fa Pah vant livant range those principal fissures including innumerable parallel fissures were openings for the upward flow of rhyolite and kindred eruptive material materi al prior pter to the complete solidifying of the rhyolite the clear creek fracture reopened and basaltic material was forced up through the structure the bed extends westerly from sevier station a distance of some fourteen miles where rhyolite becomes the country rock and forms the ape apex c of the range the earlier geological conditions porphyry extends south erly a distance of a mildor two and disappears und under er the more recent rocks to the east cast of the annie laurie lauric an enormous helt belt comes in from mt aft belknap and forms tife divide between kirn berly basin and the head of deer crock creek and is also so far as exposure is conce rend the east cast local boundary of the birdseye this peculiar porphyry with its dark base aal freck ledl with almost waita chiti 1 14 i u specks and spots extends westerly over tho the tiptop divide and down down towards fish crock the dip of the magnificent annie laurie vein or veins is towards the west and on that side at a distance of perhaps or 00 feet from the droppings crop pings is a dyke of porphyry entirely distinct from the country variety the locality where the dyke Is most prominently exposed is on the hillside to the southwest of the BI blue ne bird tunnel the tiptop divide is the apex of a large dyko dyke of porphyry which occupies h a northerly and southerly fissure or lino line of faulting the great sevier ledge with its ma marvelous wealth travois traverses ses this dyke on a southerly strike and upon which the tiptop and other bonanza boganz a claims are situated southwesterly from tho the tiptop the formation changes the birdseye porphyry on the surface at least cant gives way to rhyolite and tra chite faulting is more conspicuous and explosive volcanic activity more in evidence within this area and well in towards grand old baldy is situated the fine property of bf the trappers pride the geology of the locality is given hy by a gentleman intimately associated with the mines and is as follows the country rock is altered which has undergone a series of faulting and thereby tending to make it permeable to the action io of f mineralizing mineral izing solutions the faults so far as developments have are parallel with the veins thus far no lateral faulting has been encountered to the east and southeast of the trappers pride and directly north of mt bol be knap adap isa great field of phonolite nearly all of bilich is highly stained with iron oxide the Ibcal locality ity yields beautiful specimens of nephritic phonolite several undeveloped but most promising veins are arc opened with short tunnels the decomposed composed filling pans gold in mining quantities in a general way the gold cold mountain faults lykes dykes and veins trend towards that stupendous uplift represented by baldy anil and belknap and incidentally proves that tho the majority of the lodes are true fissures gash veins occupying as they do shrinkage cracks in the cooled eruptive rock lack the regularity of strike so conspicuous in A the vein system of the major portion of the mt baldy region t it was intended to outline tho the
