Show parowan carowan library one of genf w 0 in utah ut a h built with money given by andrew carnagie library appreciation week honors centennial anniversary of doners birth there are twenty two public libraries in utah which wre were erected with funds given by andrew carnagie our own is one of 0 them As a result we shall always owe a debt of gratitude to the great philanthropist in in 1913 the late james ollerton then mayor of parowan carowan city learn ed through liis his reading that money could be obtained from the carna gle foundation by applying tor for it to construct a library building A library board had previously been organized and a meagre library was being maintained in the relief hall with ith alice durham as librarian mr air ollerton and other members of the board which included joseph F mcgregor freeman W pendleton anna fasmussen nas mussen eloanor eleanor guymon druhn bruhn and kate taylor seaman the latter acting as secretary treasurer set about to get funds bundi from mr air carnegie and finally succeeded in getting six thousand dollars after the city had pledged six six hundred dollars a year for mal maln ni tai nance of the library to be constructed ted randall bandall 1 L jones of cedar city was employed as the architect and walter C mitchell Ml was given the contract to put up the building the site was donated by the church the building was commenced in th spring of 1914 and on may ath the cornerstone contributed by the sunday school was laid with appropriate prop public ceremony some time that tall fall it was opened for use with bell connell mathe matha a san cn as the first librarian since ben th the e building has been furnished and books have been added to the number of about five thou thousand librarians since the first one mentioned have been minnie A burton Fl elizabeth izabeth heap and eulala bulala T orton the latter serving at present with owen gwen at gurr as her assistant next week has haaby bw af signaled hs s library week with the two told fold purpose of honoring the great ahl philanthropist and of stimulating moro more and better reading with a keener appreciation of the advantages of a I 1 library in fit our community to biele c ele i continued to page 5 column 3 PAROWAN LIBRARY ONE OF TWENTY TWO IN UTAH continued from first aare brate the occasion a number of 0 nev books are being placed on oil the library shelves and it Is urged that each person read at least one good food book during the week tho present librarian to whom wo we are indebted tor for much of the above bove information has also given us some rules to be observed by those who use the library but lack ot of space in this issue necessitates that wo hold them until next issue |
