Show average man to get fair deal Roosevel ts intent shines through all his speeches Spee clies G 0 P long on promises by EARL GODWIN ASHINGTON the veteran washington white house official john cramlett whose duties include directing the great throng of daily visitors through the white house fells oils nip me that lately lie he has chaperoned as many as t ten en thousand persons in one day through those portions of the historic executive mansion which are open to the public M more ore and more american tourists are coming to washington all of them want to see the white house where once a 0 hundred visitors a 1 I day nt might ht drop in these das they count a million li visitors in less than eight months approximately 4 every week day and all different folks from different parts of the country now these white house officials are not Roos eielt appointees government officials who stay nt the white house without cann change P nod and when they tell me as they do that the crowds of people are larger have better clothes look happier more interested te and have apparently more money to spend I 1 take it that they are giving me tile the benefit of their observations 6 ions over the alie past dozen years the steady stream of tourists to washington Is a perfect cross section of the american public it Is a first hand view hat flint we get here of the average man and woman which tile the speech makers now will start calling tile the common man now there can be no doubt that franklin roosevelt is out to build a more secure foundation for the average man that purpose shines through the talks lie he has made public in recent months I 1 like to look at this determination of Roosevel ts as tile the mark of if a great statesman rather than to talk about him as a master politician which lie undoubtedly Is of the two the greatest girt gift to us Is Is his big ability to achieve a new level for the average person and give the average man a better chance at life in america ile he has been so successful at it that hn his political opponents spent three years assailing him then met at cleveland and adopted a republican party platform which endorses the whole roosevelt program and promises to do it better and without cost VERY TIRESOME it makes me tired to see the GO P assume that holler holier than thou abou attitude toward tile the new deals cost because it if it hid had not been for the hold bold spending of money there would not have been any government and possibly no country and it Is especially tiresome to read a republican platform which promises to duplicate the entire new deal at practically no cost to the public which Is of course a plain impossibility there has never been a platform admittedly so much of an imitation of the things its builders criticized before they sat down together in a committee room and told each other the truth lets take their relief proposal hoover taught tausha the republicans that no matter how much money the federal treasury had bad and no matter how bow many starving starring americans there were the starving starring american could not have any american treasury money ile he said the states must feed the starling staring no matter how bow poor tile the states that policy nearly started a 3 revolution and where the democrats determined to use the huge federal powers wealth and organization to feed the starving starring the G 0 P forgets that and now promises to use lase federal money for relief with the brilliant idea added of letting this federal money be dispensed and managed by the state politicians it Is the state political bosses who have lone done more to t drive tarry harry hopkins to the madhouse than anyone else and this idea of the republicans that the unemployed the poor tile the starving can be cared for in some better way by turning federal billions over to republican state bosses boses seems to me like opening the door to bigger and better opportunities for personal profit than even the great republican tea rot pot dome affair DANGEROUS BLUFF the republican farm plank I 1 think Is the dangerous bluff blufe which the roosevelt forces must face with every argument at their command it Is a littering glittering exhibit it looks good it promises everything that could be thought of at the moment it Is a hopeful gesture toward winning the farmer by out promising anyone else unfortunately tor for that third of america which lives on and by agriculture many farm leaders go in for politics rather than for agriculture and these gilt and tinsel ornaments set out to attract agriculturists to the G 0 P platform are a sample of what nhat professional fess ional lonal farm politicians can doehl do when in they arrive at a political convention they wrote thirteen promises for bettering farm conditions and then tucked away off by itself a orne where they slipped in a tariff plank DIM which would increase the price on everything the farm folks buy old marls mark uanna hanna himself have done better tor for the industrialists versus the farmers than they lid in this cleve land platform they just juat offer the th farmer everything they could hang oa olf the christmas tree in the way of an inducement and then sock him over the head with a tariff blackjack the moment he comes in and joins the party uy my advice Is to take it a walk on the other side of the street streel they made a great point of doing something to collect the war debts which are in a state of 0 ability partly through one of herbert hoovers hoover great suggestions for a debt holiday but they make it completely impossible to deal with any eur europeans by closing our doors to their products they adopt the same selfish I 1 1 foolish shortsighted trade policy which Is now settin setting each european nation at the throat tit of its neighbor 0 0 SOUND MONEY BALLYHOO those fellows who built up the landon myth and noali nominated bated him hill have a great deal of ballyhoo about sound money and their stuff Is mostly sound 1 there anything the matter with american money it if yon could sit here in washington and see the way people from all over tile the world including the U S A and europe are after it aou ou would wonder why anyone finds fault with it we ve got so much gold we hae to go out and find new places to store it we have hare more gold than all the rest of the world rind and our dollar Is about the best coin in the world today and will remain so it Is difficult for the average person to understand these highfalutin maneuvers concerning money cut but in simple words the alie hankers bankers of the east want a kind of money they can free freeze ze in their own banks and lend out it at high rates the ordinary folks want the lind kind of money that you see and handle more frequently without having to lay down on your face and hex from an eastern banker well still talking simply there has never been a better monetary and credit policy than we now have under roosevelt tile the banks are more solid there Is a more high minded and better control over credit it Is safer to buy stocks nod and bonds the thieves are arc being driven out of the investment business ness and when the G 0 P begins talking about tile the instability of the dollar please recall that th atthe the average citizen today has a better chance of keeping his dollars in a safe bank that will not collapse that lie has a better chance of investing it la in a safe security that he has a better chance of having a continued stream of good american dollars throughout his whole life than he ever had VANO ENBERG DUCKS arthur rather new deal republican senator ducked the nomination as vice president which leaves him sitting pretty as a republican presidential possibility in 1940 when landon will have been forgotten A better republican ticket might have been for president landon for vice president col frank r rank knos K nox chicago 1 publisher Is a poor no nominee minee for the second position on the ticket as he automatically mati cally and immediately loses practically the entire organized labor vote labor leaders are unanimously against knox knos for some reason knobs press agents almost dally daily harp on the fact that he be was a rough rider with teddy roosevelt in cuba that was 40 years ago and of no more use in affairs than bunker mil it simply calls attention to the fact that knos went up the hill for one roosevelt and will go beadron headlong down the hill bill chased by another roosevelt roosevelt worked hard bard to expose the awful fact that many tremendous checks were being paid out to large corporations benefiting by the new deals agricultural adjustment administration when it was all boiled down we find that there tire are some great corporations operating agricultural aural enterprises such as great sug sugar gar beet farms wheat farms etc one huge sugar enterprise got a million dollar check it showed that mortgage institutions that had grabbed ot off many a farm whose owner come through were receiving these checks which are a part of an artificial aid to busted agriculture but the one big thing that showed up was that this administration has benefited agriculture in cash more than 1200 million dollars in three years and that out of every dollar and twenty cents handed to agriculture three and a half cents went to these large operators era tors while a dollar sixteen and a half went to the regular individual farmers now the joke Is the administration it ration thinks thanks for calling in attention to this and intends to sale scale down checks for the big million acre boys some of whom I 1 understand are or Vanden bergs own constituents if they surfer suffer they have their own senator to blame THE NEW TAX BILL last L ast thing congress did before adjournment journ ment was to pass a tax bill which could have been avoided it if congress had not stretched the budget out of shape anyhow this tax bill does not affect the average man it simply goes up in the attics of large corporations and takes away some of the surplus that has been hidden from view it takes away some of the unearned windfall handed to big processors by the supreme court in the AAA decision when the backers for instance were taking the processing tax from the public and screaming ser elming as if they were taking it fro from in themselves they should have given it back to the public but they this was the legalized steal alint ahn secretary wallace complains of at al any rate this new tax bill cops gnps artzi a good slice of that steal for the beno fit bt of theAmer the american fean people ain a tile the fei fed oral treasury 0 western newspaper Naw paper union |
