Show school chool people peo pie studying I 1 1 t h resident president of teachers association I 1 kin denies that group has taken T D definite finite stand in tho the matter etli S 1 denial is made by principal glenn t E snow that southern utah teach ers era are on record as opposing a con rodo amendment which would TL T permit exemption from taxation 0 t to homesteads up to 2000 in kalua r ig bell the statement by mr snow wh wb go bile ls is president of the southern i it teachers association Is prompted ll 11 l l by y recent reports in state and coun rato ty papers to the effect that the sett sg teachers had taken such a stand A in j from him birn ito the bit t times regarding the position of the n teachers on this important question 14 la Is published herewith as follows to aws I 1 in a recent issue of the tribune Tribu nir salt lake there was a short ar tide which stated that the southern utah teachers association were I 1 opposed to the passage of the proposed amendment to the state constitution 15 ution which would armit an exi emption on homes up to 2000 as valuation the association hits has not expressed itself as favoring favo riny k or opposing this amendment though in fit the meeting at cedar on january 25 the matter was discussed at some length some of the pointed out that the adoption of 0 dc da the amendment would be a q date to the legislature to make provision tor for exempting such homes and that such provision it if carried into effect would practically para it ayze the activities of the rural schools and all cities and counties which do 46 not depend largely or on 11 mines utilities and corporate pro perty tor for their revenue others however pointed out that just such a crisis in governmental revenue would force the correction of our inequitable inadequate antiquated ant equated system of today they pointed out that every attempt to correct the glaring evils of the present system have been met with i stubborn resistance on the part of 0 ithe the favored parties who have in large measure avoided their proportionate tl onata share of governmental ex r pensa dense S s because most of the members and t officers present were not ready to commit themselves on the question t at this time there was no action taken the association Is however very much interested in the lm im and is studying it with a view to recommending a thorough con eide Aide ration by the voters who are to decide the issue it if the amendment should pass there seems to be a I 1 hopeful outlook for schools by rea son oil of a possibility of additional f state support under an equalization i plan such a hope for the cities i with special taxes and for counties with any bonded indebtedness seema brather rather remote A removal of assessed property as represented by 1110 mes now assessed at 2000 or g under would leave leav pretty slim pick ings for such communities as paro wan other rural communities and i even provo and logan would be pretty much is the came condition there are substitute tax pro grains which would we believe le lieve help the rural governmental units and at it the same time give the home owners the relief they so urgently need we are waiting for invests i gatlon gallon of some such plans we do not bellevo believe it good business to scrap our present government financial arbet setup set up with nothing in view |
