Show more snow this year in cedar breaks area snow conditions on the high plateaus of southern utah are good tor for this time of year as indicated by treasure measurements ments recently made by the national park bark service at cedar creaks ewh where re a maximum depth of 40 inches inc i its is s reported by the first ski patrol of f the season the aver age depth ps s shown by a series of 17 measurements is inches of snow having a water content of 56 inches which is somewhat better ithan last year when the january measurements showed only 45 inches of water other measurements taken this year at duck creek and harris flat by the same patrol show that all the snow Is decidedly wetter than last year at duck creek the depth Is inches with a water content of 38 inches or per cent and at harris flat the depth is inches and water content 34 inches or per cent water content at these stations in january of last year was between 13 and 15 per cent in spite of fairly wet snow the patrol consisting of at park naturalist C C and his assistant W S long reported very poor skiing conditions due to soft fluffy snow into which their skis often sank to a depth of 12 to 15 inches at one point on the 70 mile trip near navajo lake it required 4 hours to travel trave 1 4 miles up hill even on the return trip from cedar breaks to gravel spring junction it required 11 hours to ski 30 miles however no undue hardships were experienced due to the tact that the forest service and the state of utah had cooperated with the park service in providing shelter cabins well stocked with food and blankets |
