Show PRISONERS or of WAR TO BE SOURCE OF FARM LABOR I 1 an important source of farm labor in the state of utah this year will be german prisoners of war the extension service has received assurance from the war department that german prisoners of war needed for agricultural labor during this year will be kept in this country as farm laborers until the end of the harvest season or until the need for this type of farm labor will be over the local county agent lamont lament E with two count county agents in the state hyrum steffen of beaver county and merrill cook of wasatch county has been called to the state agricultural college at logan saturday may 19 these three county agents will assist G alvin carpenter state farm labor supervisor in giving german prisoners of war intensive instructions in order to better qualify them to do the type of work that they will be required to do this work will consist largely of thinning and topping sugar beets picking fruit harvesting potatoes carrots and other intensive vegetable and seed crops this intensive training period will require a period of about five days mr carpenter and these three co agents selected to do this special work have all filled missions to germany for the LD church and were selected because of their knowledge of the german language lt jg howard ahlstrom AhI of the U 6 navy came up from california last week end to spend a day or two and then take his wife joyce A ahlstrom and their new baby daughter back with him to his station for a month or two |
