Show HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULA MAY BE CHANGED TO FIT NEEDS EEDS OF FUTURE A change in curricula for junior and senior thigh high school to meet the facts and needs rather than the wants of youth is the aim aim of howard B gundersen gundao sen director of trades industries indus and distributive occupations in the state department pa part ment of education he said recently at the close of a series of industrial du arts conferences over the state meeting with school administrators and industrial arts leaders mr gundersen presented basic figures from US census reports of 1940 utah school reports and surveys show ing the states population to be 72 per cent industrial and revealed a strong leaning away from college to trades and trade training reporting on the workers in utah from the 1940 census it is explained that per cent of the states population is engaged in in agriculture ri 93 per cent in professions profeSS ons and 72 per cent in trades indus industries triest business and distributive occupations the latter divisions are include ed in what mr gunderson claims to be a sadly neglected and pha sized industrial arts program in further support of his claims the school official offers figures surrounding students in utah through a utah school report of 1924 40 here he reveals that of enrolled in inthe the first grade in 1925 only 79 per cent or are still in school in 1930 doing sixth grade work another 11 per cent disappeared from the rolls by 1933 he points out leaving or 68 per cent of the original group in the junior high school ninth grade another 19 per cent leit school during school and in lasu a survey y ot 01 me ane 1 year or high school seniar year showed 51 per cent gone and only remaining even more astounding however is is the fact that only per cent or 1160 of that original lust lu st gracce enro enrollment was still in school in the year or senior year of college and yet we emphasize college preparation and college colleg e requirements in our junior and senior high schools yes even when 1940 figures show that 55 per cent of our 18 and 19 y year ear olds were in the labor forces regarding wants and needs in educational fields especially in the secondary scon dary ary schools mr Guri gundersen dersen turned to a survey of more than 5 a average youths wherein they were questioned on what jobs they want and later recorded in categories of what jobs they get nearly half or a total of 2025 leaned to the professional or technical fields but only made the grade he shows managerial positions were wanted by but only succeeded office or sales work was wanted by and 1425 f finally reached this classification another wanted work of the skilled and were successful while only wanted work of the semiskilled and 1275 wound up in this field unskilled was the choice of and were eventually included in this group and finished in the domestic or personal field chosen by none wanted relief projects but hit this classification I 1 in answer mr gundersen maintains that schools should provide for activities in as many industries as school shops and laboratories will permit the use of typical and important industrial tools experience in production methods experience in handicrafts and many other functions of the modern industrial arts program probate and guardianship notice for further information consult the clerk of the district court or respective spec tive signers |
