Show UTAH manufacturers TO FIGHT CLOSED SHOP salt lake city in an effort to head off legislation threatening utah business and industry through the current program of certain labor organizers to set a policy of closed shop stanley J stephenson executive secretary of the utah Manufacture reW association left last week to confer with industrial loaders leaders in the east As our suggested program on legislation before the house labor committee we are adopting the seven points enunciated by walter P fuller president of the national association of manufacturers mr stephenson said these seven points follow 1 there must be no governmental compromise with this challenge by private agency to the sovereignty of government 2 the right to strike like other rights properly is subject to reasonable regulation in public interest cst without such regulation the right to strike will destroy the equally valid right to work 3 A sound national labor policy will require unions to settle their retain members on the basis of ther service to members and not through blackmailing either management or government into forcing closed shop upon employed emp loyes who do not wish to join 4 A sound national labor policy with require unions to settle their jurisdictional arguments without halting production 5 the seizure of private property by government is an unsound means of controlling unions which strike against public interest 6 civil law mot martial law would be the normal weapon of enforcement local police protection which would safeguard those desiring work against coercion or arbitrary action of labor boses is what is needed not martial law 7 A sound national labor policy resulting from the present crisis should be permanent and not limited to the present emergency the closed shop is no part of the labor abor relations act and is a controversial point which threatens the whole structure of peaceful collective bargaining relations therefore it is not properly a matter which should be included in any compulsory arbitration the utah secretary declared there can be no unity in this country and no maximum production of defense supplies as long as workers the majority of whom seek nothing but the privilege to put in a full days worx receive receive adequate wages and be a productive part of the national defense effort are bounced from pillar to post by quarrels and bicke rings aimed at strengthening the position of a few individuals rather than at improving the working status of the workmen this is just as import important art to labor as it is to industry and the public mr stephenson asserted |
