Show VEGETABLE SEED TESTS TO BE MADE IN IRON COUNTY 1 dr leonard 11 II pollard prof processo esso 1 of vegetable crops of the utah state agricultural college and dr michael senior pathologist for the U S department of agriculture spent tuesday afternoon in iron county with county agent L E tucker for the purpose I 1 of initiating a test on the tion of vegetable seeds in iron co due to the war many essential vegetable seed supplies have became alarmingly short due to the fact that imports of these seeds countries oun tries have been almost entire rom the balkans and europea ly cut off therefore the USDA the state experiment station and the extension service are cooperating in an effort to determine where in utah vegetable seed production might bo be undertaken on a bommel cial scale tests are being conducted in five counties of the state du cli esne davis sevier washington and iron E M corry cony and L E davis are the cooperating farmers in iro iron n county tuesday dr and dr pollard assisted county agent L E and L E davis in planting twelve experimental rows rows of carrots about two hundred feet in length later turnips table tabe beets and lettuce will be planted A thermometer was set up on the test plot and a record of hourly tern tem pera tures will be recorded during the entire growing season after the carrot seed was planted in the test plot county agent took drs pollard and down to the rulon esplin farm and showed them the splendid two acre crop of carrot that mr esplin is producing dr pollard estimated the yield of this carrot seed crop would be from eight hundred to 0 o one thousand pounds of a very h ligh i gh quality i ty ca carrot brot seed both visitors were enthusiastic a bout out the possibility of commercial vegetable seed production in iron county they indicated that it may be possible within the next few years to stimulate the production of vegetable seeds to the extent of one thousand acres for iron county alone providing farmers f ind find the production of vegetable seeds profit ble able |
