Show COUNTY AGENTS HEAR agricultural LEADERS AT ANNUAL convention more than 60 agricultural county agents home demonstration agents and specialists of the utah state agricultural college exten service were in session four days last week in their annual convention at the college principal speakers at the convention included eric englund assistant chief of the bureau of agricultural economics H W hochbaum chief of the division oi 0 field coordination washington D C president E G peterson director william peterson dr R 11 walker dean of the school of agriculture ri and director of the experiment peri ment station and dilworth walker state representative of the bureau of agricultural economics president peterson opened the convention with an address on the coordination between extension workers and the college lie he pointed out that the main functions of the institution are to train young men and women to enter agriculture industry the professions and homes to gather data on agriculture and home making through experimentation and to carry this scientific information to the farms and homes through the extension service organization mr hochbaum told the extension workers that it was their d duty u t y to make their programs a reality before we can interest people in farm and home programs they must first see a problem that effects them one of the biggest problems for the farmer here in the west is to get more land so that he can operate a more mora balanced and economic uni unia he said director william peterson discussed county and planning programs which he stated are becoming more and more important each year if county plans are to be effective they must make direct contact not only with the fa farmers rm ers and home makers but with the federal and state agencies dirce tor for peterson also advised the county agents to cooperate with various organizations concerning the farm bureau he told the grou that there is great merit in having this worthy organization ir in every county and he urged stan members to assist in its function dean walker emphasized the fact that the purpose of the experiments peri ments conducted at the station were leading to a betterment ol 01 agriculture and rural home life to assist the agent in keeping in touch with the work of the sta tion an eight page newspaper will wili be published beginning march dr walker announced dr englund spoke on the con of the possible aftermath of war on agriculture in ili september dr england stated prices rose in anticipation of th the mountain high price of the last world war however this was a mistake because the nations have been preparing for this war and they are now in a better position to face it without so much help from this country the world supplies are greater prodoc production tion capacities pa cities are greater and belligerent countries have large supplies of food stuffs and materials on hand therefore no immediate larre large demand for our products is to be be expected the trade of foreign nations with this country will probably be more in the militaristic type of products rather than agricultural products he concluded in reporting the work of the bureau of animal industry in utah in cooperation with the extension service dr C L jones of salt lake city said that every county in this state is now tuberculosis accredited that means that reactors to this disease do not exceed one half of one percent in any county ho he explained now were working on the eradication of bangs disease and hope to have several counties accredited within a few months reports and programs of work I 1 were presented ted by county agents and members ol of the resident staff the conference was brought to a 9 close with a summary pt the entire program by director peterson who also admonished those present to return to their respective posu with renewed determination to assist farmers and throughout utah in solving their problems |
