Show halterman and rowley harvest dry land wheat the dry land wheat grown in the flat northeast of town by S A halterman and W clair rowley was harvested yesterday and turned out much better than was expected the patch consisted of thirty four acres and some of it produced as much as 18 bushels per acre although the average of the entire piece would run between 10 and 12 bushels from one section of the patch r pleasured at about ares acres six bags of wheat were harvested and when taken to the roller mill aver aeed above 90 pounds to the bag or over 54 bushels from the 3 acres this was the best section of the entire patch however and some of the rest fell way below this the T h e owners have promised to give us a detailed account of the harvest as soon as it is figured out and the grain is all weighed some of the grain is somewhat shrunk due to the very unfavorable spring and summer but mr hermansen operator of the local flour mill states that it is still good milling wheat and most of the crop is being taken right to the mill the harvesting was done by a new allis chalmers combine recently purchased by wilford day and the new machine was doing a fine job when the writer of this story visited the morning the wheat was planted last august and with a very favorable fall and winter a heavy stand was obtained it continued to do well until the hot dry weather came and without the usual storms in april and may it matue the crop possible on such a stand but the experiment conducted there by these men tind and one or two others proves what could be don there in normal years they have some dry land corn and potatoes there that look pretty good considering the kind of season we are having but rain will have to come soon if they are to continue to thrive they also have twenty acres of land ready for planting to wheat next month and lre contemplating getting a drill which will put the seed well down to the moisture this planting wont be so heavy as the one just harvested which was too heavy for dry land wheat |
