Show city considers pea pickers camp problem A special meeting of the city council was held wednesday night to consider the problem of camps for transient pea pickers who are already arriving to find work in the pea harvest which is to start about july the meeting was called at the request of the city marshal harrell dalton to see if something ir in the way of camp regulations such as water lighting and sanitation be worked out mr dalton reported that already two groups had located here one at the old whitney blacksmith shop on main street and the other on the wm H dark clark property on the east edge of town neither of these places are equipped with necessary sanitation facilities and the latter has neither water nor lights on the ground he also reported that a mr sam rose who was here last fall during the harvest season was trying to establish the camps and asked whether the city could afford to pipe water and run power lines to vacant lots on the outskirts of the city for mr roses camps the council was of the opinion that this be done unless the owner of the property would furnish the materials mr carl di fiore who is the local representative of the pacific produce co for which the peas are being grown was called in to the meeting and asked if his company was sponsoring the camps of pic pickers k ers or if the men already here were employed by the company mr di fiore told the council that so far as he knew these men were in in no way connected with the produce company and no preparations had been made so far for the coming pea harvest he stated that mr matt coelho of the above company would be here next week sometime to start making arrangements for picking and shipping the early peas frank santos and H L adams are the only farmers who are growing the early peas and who is to be hired to pick them known yet the main part of the crop will not be ready for harvest until the middle of august and mr di fiore states that all local labor in available would be used then he did voice the thought that the company would prefer all transient labor that may come in to establish their camps closer to the fields in which they are to 10 labor |
