Show LIQUOR STORE PROBLEM hero here as 39 there la is some agitation in other utah cities n notably hurricane to have the liquor store clos fl cot or taken out of the community would to heaven solution of the problem creati create by our excessive liquor consumption were as easy as that pat it it so ao simple if the desire to have the store removed could be acceded to by the state liquor commission then what more burned running matting to some other town to buy liquor more highway accidents more money spent more breweries back in homes more bootleggers and probably as much liquor consumed we possibly would see less drinking because going elsewhere to buy it we would drink much of it elsewhere and maybe serve our jail sentences elsewhere but the money would be spent and aad the liquor consumed just the same no wo we hardly think closing or removal of 0 the liquor store Is the proper solution tor for us for hurricane or tor for any other community what the solution Is we venture to say so long as sixty to seventy percent roughly estimated of 0 our population drinks a little and some ot of it not so little and thinks it is alright so long as mothers permit their husbands and sons to make it in their homes so long as people who are otherwise serve it to their guests so long as many of 0 our public officials remain indifferent to flagrant violations ot of our present control measures some of them publicly proclaiming for political purposes that they will make no effort at enforcement we doubt it if there Is any solution so long as a ces and even approves ot of liquor an tp opposing posing minority will continue coLtin continue ue to have difficulty in iii finding a solution we doubt it the problem will ever bo be soared by legislation rather solution must come we believe through education and an awakened public sentiment against it many who voted tor for the repeal ot of prohibition did so only with the hope that after an experience such as we are having now a reaction against excessive use ot of liquor would come incidentally those who condemn the liquor commission tor for conditions in the state slate do so without knowledge of the facts or with malicious intent the commission was created and given certain things t to da by our state legislature A succeeding cc legislature clarified its duties and gave it additional responsibility lity in the way ot of raising revenue nue it has conscientiously avoided anything which would tend to stimulate consumption disapproving and virtually any advertising ver within its control I 1 which would tend to entourage encourage its use rather it ft nas as insisted and the newspapers of 0 the state have been glad to cooperate that the advertising be a 4 simple statement of quality and code number without any Ilig suggestion gest 0 it of 0 smartness or benefit from its use and designed only to P promote the use ot of the advertised brand in preference to some other brand we question the commissions right isett i under our present laws tu to close or remove a store in a given community certainly it bo be justified in doing so without of an all overwhelming sentiment favoring such removal when that sentiment develops sufficiently the problem will take care ot of itself |
