Show stockmen Stoc kmen ranchers invited to desert range field day plans plan for the second annual field day to be conducted september 3 and 4 by the intermountain forest and range experiment station about 50 miles west of milford utah were here announced tuesday by reed W bailey director the programs are being dratted drafted in cooperation with the utah state agricultural college extension service and the university of nevada extension service V ice stockmen Stoc kmen ranchers foresters aria and others interested Inta rested ill the ua the desert range are being invited to attend the tour ot of inspection to study the results of four years of experimental work on well managed range rang and d to take part in the special program to be conducted at taij th branch station headquarters in the evening of september 3 director bailey asid experiments will be explained and the tour conducted under the supervision of dr george stewart in charge of range investigations tor for the intermountain inter mountain station and selar S hutchings in charge of the desert station about eight years ago the forest service became vitally interested in the conditions found on oil the desert range of western utah director bailey said cattle and sheep owners who were running their outfits on the desert range reported that the lamb and calf crops were light that the livestock were getting poor and many were unable to survive the winter season sheep lacked vigor and costly supplemental teed feed was required to curtail heavy los fei in flocks As a basis tor for assisting the stockmen stoc kmen in maintaining their herds and flocks in a thrifty condition throughout the winter season investigations were begun for desert le ve loping and improving the desert der range the federal government in 1933 earmarked ear marked acres ot of land in the western part of the state tor for th the forest eforest service to divide into study pastures and a camp of workers was assigned to fence the area and build the station research has haa been in progress at the desert range station since 1932 the results of which will be seen september 3 and 4 by those who attend the field day programs director bailey explained |
