Show elder gurr writes of mission in germany editors note we are glad to pass on oil to lo our readers the following interesting letter just received from elder arnold 0 gurr in germany guben N L 9 editor parowan carowan times it has been some time since I 1 last wrote to you during which time many things have happened here first of all we had our mis slon sion wide conference in berlin stall ing frig may and lasting nearly a week this was a wonderful conference one that I 1 will never forget there were nearly a hundred missionaries sio sion aries narles there and at some of the meetings the attendance of members and friends reached a total of nearly nine hundred brother ric richard R lyman and sister lyman came over from london and brother george D came over from america to the conference the missionary testimony meetings in which the hundred participated were outstanding to me we had time out during the conference to see berlin which Is very beautiful in may the mission orles eries had a baseball tournament in which we played tor for the championship I 1 happened to be on the team that won second place another experience which I 1 will never forget Is the kilometer bicycle trip that my companion and 1 1 took with sever il other arles to wa traveled over very good road chieh Is bordered nearly the entire distance with fruit trees and shade trees the country was green with crops everywhere these farmers certainly make use of every piece of land OUT our route took us through the fisl old own of kustrin which Is connected in history with frederick the great and his father when we returned to schon lanke after conference we found that our application to stay in that city had been refused there is a law in germany forbidding foreign ers from living close to the border therefore they had grounds tor for removing us however there were pro bably other reasons tor for our having to leave the reone being that tho the city officials have a dislike tor for the mormons cormons Mor mons from Schon lanke I 1 was transferred to 10 this town which is a much larger place having a population of about it is about ki kilometers ometery south and east from berlin the principal occupations are farming and manufacturing the city itself Is very old some of it being built about 1200 the old protestant church which stands in the market place and which Is still used was built sometime before 1200 the people are handicapped here as 03 in in other places in germany by the lack of power although there are many large diesel trucks and tractors it is still a common sight to see a pair of cows hitched to a w wagon agon several times daily it is possible to see this sight from our window fuel Is a problem to the poorer class of 0 people also at one time my companion and I 1 accompanied a family of members to the forest to gather fuel their method was to dig the green stumps which was left after the tree had been removed to the sawmill from the earth being careful to save all the roots and then till fill the holo hole up again it tile family worked hard all dav they would r bather algot ly over ula bundre pound of which they ha haj 1 t p haul abil dbl abl 1 I two kilometers on a little wagon two or three hundred pounds at a time another familiar sight hero here Is the beer wagon which Is drawn by a horse in this case the beer is carried la in large barrels arranged on the wagon in such a manner that the faucets are arc easily accessible As the driver goes through the streets lie ho rings a bell and when the inhabitants want beer they come out with their buckets pitchers or any thing that they havo have handy bandy to get their days supply despite the beer wagon and the bars I 1 have not seen a drunken man on the streets here in guben cullen 1 we have a very healthy branch the beer wagon etc here de despite spite best in the german it Is one of the austrian mission having a member hip of 38 the branch la Is Jett over by german saints who seem td do a very good job ot of it brother do jones labored hero here as well I 1 as several other missionaries that I 1 know I 1 want to take this opportunity to thank you tor for sending me the parowan carowan times I 1 certainly look forward to the time when it comes every week tor for it la Is the only american newspaper that I 1 receive regularly give my best beat regards to the east ward and to tile the readers ot of the par owan times time s sincerely arnold 0 gurr 4 |
