Show howe about where hope Is highest need another win receiverships Receiver ships 0 boll by ED HOWE I 1 I 1 TALKED lately to a cautious con serva lve tIve man loan who had just made an automobile trip to florida he says saya that at one place a new perfect ro road ad was encountered 74 miles long in traveling the entire distance not half dozen other automobiles were wera encountered countered probably the bonds issued 1 to build the road are la in default the cautious conservative man sat beside the driver and says that except at turns the entire distance was made at the rate of a mile a minute that finally this speed teemed seemed a little slow alow they had bad picked out a certain town to reach by nightfall and since there was nothing to hold them why not get along the conservative cautious gradually grow in recklessness on the trip a call was made on OD a man in georgia who lives in a palace ot of pink marble costing it a million dollars ile he owns nearly all of 0 a county a town and a marble quarry such a man would seem lucky this man three days later he was hurried to a hospital for a dangerous operation the lucky man was sev enty nine years old at another place a call was made on aman a man twenty five firs years old who had bad three thousand turkeys gobbling ab about Ms farm for several days the tha conservative cautious man did not see a newspaper or hear a radio and almost no conversation the country through which he passed was so fine and the people so polite he almost had h hope ope for or his country again no starvation no rioting anywhere re but on reaching the end of his journey the newspapers were again ar available al lable and again the conservative cautious lou man was greatly disturbed tearful fearful of the auturo futuro almost without hope 0 0 one of the troubles with civilization to Is it have enough private watchmen to aid the police I 1 have noticed that most of the more important business men e employ amplo y private watchmen at night and these watchmen carry pistols we have adopted all liec necessary essary laws to help civilization thus recognizing the truth that such laws are just and sensible and for the greatest good of the grea greatest tet n number aniber but worthy citizens good enough and in the majority are too careless in seeing that the laws are enforced every good citizen should dally daily be a private watchman and assist in correcting the ill behaved in the minority if necessary to es establish their ant authority hority and the law of god the good citizens should form vigilance committees and be rough on oe occasion caslon I 1 go so far as to believe the younger men should form militia compan companies leq and without expense to the state or nr anyone become a force for the common sense morality that has lately been breaking down the first thing we must do in the present crisis it if we hope for betterment Is for the well behaved majority to control the comparative para tive few who violate the law as vagrants disturbers disturb ers housebreakers house breakers tramps radicals flophouse flop house patrons find and in general attacks on the civilized rules of conduct A great light fight has been going on over the world for a long time and with growing browin intensity during the past decade friends of decency should realize that the prole farians have achieved the victory and wipe out the disgraceful defeat they have suffered the north norm the east the west wes t has suffered another bull run we must have another another win for the majority and the pence long experience has recommended I 1 rarely hear bear of a congressional investigation vesti gation that does not seem trifling and very empens expensive ive but one Is going on now worth while A federal judge Is being investigated because of outrageous fees be allowed receivers in bankruptcy one receiver was allowed for services probably honestly worth three or tour four thousand dollars I 1 know nothing about the case except the testimony in the newspapers and this includes charges that the judge shared in the fees that the money was wag paid in cash to avoid future rura fura exposure there to Is ra rarely re a judge who does not award outrageous tees fees to members of his profession fes sion I 1 cannot remember a time when this has not been done and without serious protest from congress until now nothing going on in wall street previous to 1029 1929 was equally corrupt careless or whatever one pleased to call it we have lately been specially slipping in morals but this receivership scandal has gone on a long time corruption in police departments has never been worse the police have occasionally casio caslo nally been investigated but I 1 have not before noted judges judge 9 being culled to account as in this case for I 1 once it seems to me it a congressional committee has done a just important and worthy thing nothing in a mans life Is more important than acknowledging faril faults ts and trying to remedy them somewhat for faults are always as annoying as a wart on a R busy finger at least rub the wart with hacon bacon rind rind and bury it under the eaves of the house make some effort to get rid of it when you yon have hard luck there Is of course courm only one thing to do endeavor to improve it the neighbors wont ont help you it Is often the neigh bors bora who stir up your hard luck |
