visiting with the aid ot of our tow chain we were able to help hell them clem to the top the road from richfield to flan lake by way of the glenwood cutoff about 40 miles or through sigurd which Is a little farther is a beautiful drive most of it can be made in high gear and without danger and fish lake Is a beautiful place the lake itself is just under seven miles long averaging a little more than a mile wide feet deep in some places as aa clear as can be and winding between two mountains the east shore la Is a wooded slope of the mountain with pines and aspens ashens right light down to the waters edg from the west shore the slope Is nore gradual from the waters edge edae where the altitude Is about feet for a distance back and then Is vury very abrupt to the top of fish lake h which has an elevation of oti feet or about feet higher than our brien head point on the west shore the pines pinea and ashens aspens give gie way in places to meadows I 1 and to slopes of mountain sago sage above which the flowers and grass can be seen crystal streams of water from the size of our own canyon creek down to mere seeps gush I 1 and gurgle into the lake an along 1 the side and the shore Is dotted with a hundred or two pretty little summer homes tind and camps in the trees between lakeside inn of at the approach to the lake and r S tavern a mile farther along the shore the fish lake forest supervisor has a summer station about midway elong the west side of the lakeland lake and back from the shore and near the north end Is the ranger station now nov occupied by our old friend valley grass valley and others to the north where it Is used tor for irrigating thern them the south end of the lake gives way to gently rolling hills of sage with grassy flats flata and many flowers grafing gracing Is restricted around around the lake 84 s the vegetation grows rank and beautiful and there are only enough horses and cattle grazing contentedly over the section to add charm to the picture tavern built by our own former townsman charles half brother of peter and y martin represents an investment ot about and would bould require columns columna to adequately describe it looking out over the lake from near midway along the west shore it Is a gigantic lodge built of saw logs much on the order of the VP UP lodge at cedar breaks it you have seen the latter but longer and with many cabins surrounding it and a boat house and pier in tile edge of the lake from the wide rus rua tic alc balcony extending the tbt full berig length ath of 0 the east side one fine commands a so beautiful wed say gay as some ot of southern other scenic attractions tr it Is nevertheless a land of weird enchantment the wonder of ct which increases as one penetrates its sandstone fastnesses tast fast nesses in the language of 0 another it Is a di district ot of polychrome mountains a sandstone wilderness ot of deep clefts towering buttes immense domes huge monoliths all banded alith alth reds and yellows and grays and greens natural bridges cliff dwellings and through the very heart ot of this land ot of wonder runs rung the fremont liver supporting from rom its waters water tiny tanning farming communities quaint and almost primitive in some respects A As s one enters the region over the state highway 24 fremont with its fertile fields boasting a population of 0 is a few miles to the north presently we enter loa county seat and largest settlement of 0 wayne county with a population of 0 about the size ot of para gonah it ii is is surrounded by farm lands land and meadows dotted with dairy cattle and Is a typical little farm community further along the highway across the narrow valley is lyman with less than too population and on down the cou course arse of the fremont fremo n t which runs east and south to eventually find its way into the colorado is bicknell next largest town or of the county with a few more than residents near by where the river bends are the bicknell flats duck hunters paradise controlled by a local gun club its a region of meadows and sloughs beautiful between the sand saad stone hills and bluffs beyond which at considerable distances are boulder mountain and other elevations in every direction which rise to ten or eleven thousand feet then comes torrey here bishop runs a general store and as a hobby he ha explores the surrounding bluffs and sandstone ledges di digging into atle ruins ot of ancient t ca clatt it dwellings and collecting various articles used and left by the tribe of which once inhabited taa region gion the balcony of his store is a veritable museum of these things another thing one notices in torrey is its bridges single red sandstone slabs eight to ten feet long three or tour four feet wide and six to ten tell inches in thickness constitute its foot bridges and three or four of these stretched side by side a ross the streams make dependable and durable wagon ridges bridges the hills in the region are literally strewn with slabs of this nature varying in size from tiny little ones of a few inches in dimensions to much larger than those described and so true of edge and surface as s to appear the work of a master stone cutter walks and streets could well be paved with them shortly beyond torrey the grad id d highway gives way to a meandering road which follows the ridges and gorges ever down ao faulta little settlement of seven families in a wide place in the gorge named tor for the tine fine fruit it produces only feet above sea level and protected by the almost perpendicular walls of the gorge it has a long growing season and water than it can possibly use grapes melons apricots peaches peache 6 pears english and black walnuts and miny other varieties of
