Show LOCAL to CAL n M 1 L A CHORUS WINS FIRST PLACE IN CONTEST FINALS additional proof that parowan carowan still has some musical talent and a capable director came last saturday evening when the bf 1 I amale cho ra rd from rom here won first place in the fin I 1 s ain in competition with the entire L D S church M 1 I A membership six strong choruses entered the semi finals on saturday afternoon atter noon in the big assembly hall in lake caty and from them the choruses from parowan carowan and the oquirrh stakes were selected to compete in the fin ale the latter were held in the tabernacle along with other contest 1 numbers on evening even lne and the parowan carowan chorus won first place by unanimous decision of the judges i I 1 other contest numbers number e that even tug ing were the M mons meng quartet the i ladles ladies chorus and the instrumental trio these with the orations of both the young mena mens and the young ladies ladles contests an ortan number by professor anil and two baritone solos made a very splendid evenings program for tile the multitude of two or three thousand people who were present to io witness it to mr eagar who directed ohp th winning chorus la Is due largely the credit for the success which came gf ct it the interpretation which he be placed on the music was an outstanding factor la in bringing the decision to his group his ability to balance the chorus along with his bis patience and painstaking effort were the things which got them best there was 1 in them from the sl singers bersand ger sAnd and mrs watkins walking at the be piano was a strong contributing factor to the success of the chorus she and mr watkins made two trips down from ogden at considerable expense leaving their work to ta assist when it was all over mrs watkins remarked that she had always been proud of her connection with parowan carowan but that now she was more so BO the personnel of the chorus beginning with the first tenor Is ray D garver garner B B E whitney E ray lyman WW W W claude orton L nelson marsden W clair rowley dean mitchell Ml victor watkins rulon wilford durham howard hawaii ward ivan johnson and rex C ward following their victory they sang over the radio a novel experience for all of them and one which brought many compliments the next day from people who were listening in dancers not so fortunate rate fate d ant deal so kindly with our dancers who represented this division illas dias in the contest though those as of us from here who taw saw that contest till still think that clayton and la mar blar were entitled to a place there were sixteen couples entered irk in the finals tor for this contest which was held at salvatr saltair on friday evening they were all ail good dancers and very graceful but we were all betting on couple no 2 which was the parowan carowan represent k natives until the judges announced that first place went to couple sixteen and second place to couple fifteen the winning couple was from one of the idaho stakes a little japanese girl and a boy who recently came from england A rather interesting erttle sidelight on this coup couple I 1 e w was a re counted the following day in the presence bencion of the writer by our former townsman tow naman orton durham who heard it from a lady who had taught school last winter in the idaho community from which the couple came the story atory runs to the effect that the little girl was very anxious to enter the competition in her ward but that none of the boys boya were disposed to dance with her in tears the she told the lady teacher her troubles and the young man got to hear it and had compassion on her they 3 h had 1 ad little opportunity to dance together before the tryouts in the ward and were not considered conil dered seriously by the other contestants until the ward inala finals come winning the decision there however they continued on to first I 1 I 1 place in the finals |
