Show CORNER STONE LAID FOR NEW WEST WARD CHAPEL with fitting ceremony the corner stone for or west wards new L D S chapel was laid on sunday afternoon of this week june 3rd ard at 4 by bishop II 11 L adams of that ward in the presence of a large audience the affair was more or less of an impromptu nature due to the fact that the work on the chapel and the amu amusement semen t hall adjoining and in which both wards are interested is progressing so rapidly that there we was a little time to arrange a celebration to have postponed it would have delayed the work and therefore the ceremony was arranged hurriedly and with very little advance notice too late tor for any mention of 0 it in last weeks times the at attendance was therefore not as large larga as it would have been under other circumstances though there was a good representation of people from both wards as well as some people from cedar city and paragonah Para gonah bishop H L adams presided and the service commenced with the choir and congregation singing for the strength ot of the hills walter C matchell itchell Ml Al offered an appropriate prayer and then the choir members of both wards under the direction of professor engar sang stars of aborn morning shout tor for joy a composition by Pa rowans pioneer choir director thomas durham the latter batters lat a daughter metta D robinson was at the piano which had been brought to the scene in a truck the corner stone a massive one which had been made on the grounds from granite filings and cement was then lowered into place by means ot of a block and tackle and pronounced to be properly laid by bishop adams on the front of it had been inscribed the words erected 1928 and the provision was made tor for a tin box bos in the center in which a history of the building to date and other data concerning cerni g the wards lards the officers of the vario auxiliary organizations etc was placed was placed and incidentally a copy ot of this account of the ceremony was included its being written with that in view accounts for its detail in connection with the laying bishop adams talked briefly then arthur K R fife ot of the stake presidency gave an interesting talk prefacing his remarks with an apology for president palmers halmers Pal mers absence on account of an important engagement elsewhere oscar al lyman chairman of the building committee was called on and he told about the material and workmanship which is going into the building saying that no expense Is being spared to make tor for its durability and convenience but all unnecessary features are being eliminated in the interest ot of economy A ladies chorus directed by mr engar eager and accompanied by glenna ar ward at the piano sang a ber and then mr ladell who is in charge of the construction work was called to speak lie he said that though thigh more expensive chapels and amusement halls have been erected by some ot of the wards in the church some of which had gone to the extreme yet none 0 of them had achieved the purpose for which they were built more fully than will this one and none of them are more convenient nor better tor for the amount they cost coat than will this one be with ample class rooms a modern kitchen and banquet hall a room tor boy scout activities etc in addition to to the main auditorium ot of the church and the amusement hall proper the building will be a convenience and a source of bridd to the community he gild and strictly modern in every detail he concluded his bis very interesting talk with nith an appeal to the people of 0 community to finish it and to park and beautify the grounds before they stop marsden made a short talk during which he enumerated the articles which were going atno the corner stone atone box he announced that the committee commit leo from the east ward will call on the members of the ward during the week for their contributions one towards the erection of the buildings and he appealed to t them h cut to respond liberally in conclusion the choir sang an I 1 anthem and the blosl closing dg was i offered ty by george st photographs of the gathering was wan taken before the crowd dispersed PT I 1 |
