Show ESTATE LEVI MY STAY I 1 H NEW BILL WHEN compromise WAS MADE IT WAS ARRANGED THAT SECTION STAND democrats democrat not likely to support senator norris fight between the senate and the house washington Washing tou the disposition of the democrats in the senate is neither to support senator norris in hla his proposal sal to postpone the collection of this years jaxes axes in order to allow more time tor for debate nor otherwise seriously to change the conception conceptio a ot of the tax bill as nonpartisan non partisan in substance and in manner and time ot of disposition the tha outstanding controversy about the bill Is not between republicans and democrats as such but rather between the house and senate over the retention ot of the estate tax As to that the probability ot of the house winning and of the estate tax being retained grows greater some of those who in the beginning assented to a nonpartisan basis for or this years tax bill and whose assent was essential to that rather delicate diplomacy now say that the retention of the estate tax was a fundamental part of the original compromise and that by implication at least the senate leaders were parties to that early understanding der since a disturbance ot of the compromise now might peril the bill and would certainly make fut future ure continuation of the spirit of compromise impossible the advantage in the controversy is on the side of th those ose house bouse leaders who in the beginning made a compromise and nonpartisan bill possible this consideration will have weight As respects nonpartisan cooperation ot of the tax bill and otherwise there is evidence that president coolidge prizes it regards himself and the country as a beneficiary ot of it Is grateful for it and would like to continue it on his side there Is an approach to something like an era of good feeling in his formal message to congress he paid a tribute to the democrats tor for nonpartisan action in the tax bill and on several occasions the spokesman of the president has inspired newspaper appreciation of the democratic attitude in the discussion of reservations to the world court the spokesman of the president made it known that mr coolidge would bs be guided by four senators of whom two lenroot and pepper are republicans and two swanson and walsh are democrats several conferences feren ces coolidge has had with democratic leaders pre ere interpreted as part dt the same spirit |
