Show sus SUSPENSE rENSE AND stagnation As this comment is being written tile the community and in fact the entire county la js in a state ot of suspense and feverish unrest for the past three months that suspense has been stagnating business conditions more and more with its growing intense ness until today to day saturday it looks as though the breaking point were near business houses are at their wits end to pacify jobbers who are demanding their money and on oil the other hand they are besieged tor for ther extensions of credit by their their customers the banks have loathed to the ih limits 0 of safety and the people them selves are unable to get their minds on other affairs sufficiently to accomplish much because of 0 the suspense and its underlying cause we say as this is being written those are the conditions by the time it is off ob the press the suspense may all be over we sincerely hope so but even so the relief will only be temporary the underlying cause of 0 these periodical depressions and consequent suspense and stagnation will not have been removed they will recur again and again so long as we have only one industry of con sequence to rely on the immediate cause of the present condition is that we sold our wool though it is past pait the season when it should have moved loid and since that is the only thing we have to sell our whole business structure Is dependent on it when contract ig and selling proceed normally the mili tion Is not so bad but even then i apay days are too tar far apart they ork out about in this wise the 0 binary wool grower gets a big mount in one check pays oft off what debts he cant reasonably put off and ana then depends the balance in a short time tor for improvements or au an automobile and then he be la Is virtually broke until his lambs move six months later and what Is true ot of him is in a way true ot of his employees and consequently of the community so when any irregularity occurs in the marketing ot of the wool or the lambs the present condition Is inevitable and it our sole dependence were on alfalfa seed sugar beets or any other one industry the condition would be the itie same or possibly worse the only permanent solution is in getting some more industries established and to financial tin genius among us should be devoted it sheep and wool were all our locality would produce as some among us seem to think there might be excuse tor for our presena condition but in a country where anything common to the temperate zone will grow where conditions are next to ideal toi tor dairying poultry and other things which might be mentioned there seems to be only one excuse the one voiced by rumen kumen jones rec antly antly as 83 reported tb 1 these last week an effort is now being made to establish a dairy industry and some borne other possibilities for this coin community are mentioned in these columns they are entitled to the consideration ot of all ot of us and our support it they are feasible to the end that repetitions of our present condition may be impossible |
