Show AMERICAN FOREST WEEK by presidential tills week april to la is american forest week its purpose is obvious originally the observance ot of the week was referred to as forest protect protection week which name implies pretty well its purpose but in latter years it has been renamed american forest week and is called to our attention each year as a means ot of educating us is to the necessity ot of conserving our too rapidly vanishing natural resources la in the way of forests the observance of the week grows constantly in national importance originally 0 igi nally it was under the direction of the forest service ot of the U S department part ment ot of agriculture but the forestry problem Is now ot of such national importance that the week in which to educate us to its seriousness and the necessity of conservation is being sponsored by various local state all and national organizations ex governor frank 0 lowden ot or illinois is at the head ot of the national committee while the utah chairman ot of the state committee Is win H bywater former chief ot of the salt lake city tire fire department part ment Lo calley there seems to be no interested te organizations but there is nevertheless occasion jor for serious reflection and concern comparison of our tl t her ber resources with what they were a scant halt century ago reveals the extent to which our forests are ang de pleated and it re outre any stretch 0 of imagination to le of a condition in the not tar far ant future which will necessitate importing at exorbitant cost most guilding Iding materials in the way alber though the present generation may uffer suffer materially as a result ot of santon anton destruction and profligate of our forests future genera e certain to be robbed of their I ilage to say nothing ot of the an destruction lest ruction through carelessness ire through improper grazing graz ng e destroy potential thousands ot of of our choicest timber for or decor purposes including christmas s each year there is no disposti 0 rj to or thought of depriving any iraa of its christmas tree or any a ay occasion ot of its beautiful evergreen decorations but the practice ot of going into our canyons and cutting bermis the choicest specimens of our cst varieties of trees tor for such purposes should be discouraged and discontinued along with many ot of our other careless and wasteful practices in our forests some pertinent rules for the prevention ot of tire fire which extracts probably the biggest annual toll in oar forests as prepared by the U S forest st service will be found elsewhere in these columns the first editorial utterance ot of lle flu times under its present management five years ago this month was an appeal tor for diversification ot of our local industries with a reference to the dairy industry as one ot of the potential possibilities today to day we feel justified in repeating that appeal the idea was by no means original with us rather we gave expression then and do today oday to o day to it as being the feeling of people who have given careful thought to our needs as a community and to our possibilities this spring perhaps more than any other time since then the necessity tor for something other than our one outstanding industry Is emphasized when wool and lambs find ready sale at good prices business conditions generally are good with us though two pay days only in a year Is not the most desirable condition but whenever the market tor for those products slump that clump baump la is reflected as at the present time in all our abc acc activities ivi ties and it it were to continue for or any length of time it might easily prove disaster ous to some ot of us for that reason it for no other the movement which the chamber ot of commerce Is attempting to launch a movement to establish a dairy industry in the valley meet wit with h enthusiastic support from everyone ot of us from the banker to the last common laborer we must have some other industries we can still have more and better sheep but some eggs in another basket are necessary to our prosperity without them our possibilities tor for progress are certainly limited with them the valley had just as aa well support ten tea times its r present population we wonder what 14 13 Jc dc layos layng ill alia completion ol of our job oh yes the itie walks were all laid last tall fall but no one lias has paid dald any money on them nor can they until details are am settled up by the engineer and in the meantime the city is 13 paying interest on interim warrants issued to the contractor and the engineer which sooner or later will be shifted to the property properly tw owners n ers some ot of whom were ready to pay up as soon its as the job was completed sickness in the family of 0 t the he on engineer gincer delayed the matter until the first ot of the year but what la Is holding it now does anybody know just why a decision couie come from roni the supreme court in iii ahe case against judge burton is one of 0 the mysteries on oil the theory that no news e is good news it is probably all right tor for them to keep silent but too many p people e ople in the district are arc in silence to mean something else ise they reason that it if lie he guilty the court would say as much without delay the result is that the courts court s vi prestige es is waning there I 1 is a regrettable lack of confidence conti dence which will continue to increase until the decision Is rendered the times has always been in a mood to give judge burtoft the benefit ot of the doubt we never have felt that he wilfully or mali piously did wrong nor shall WO we until the court gives decision against hini him but in justice to the court and tin people of this district we hope mal a decision will soon lie be forthcoming |
