Show FLOOD IN CANON PORTIONS OF OLD ROAD WASHED mm OUT NEW ONE NOT HOT DAMAGED 9 WORKMEN HAVE NARROW ESCAPE that the new road up the P aro canyon to the cedar breaks is located about right was demonstrated conclusively on thursday evening when an eight foot wall of water gushed down the canyon from the vicinity of bear flat sweeping before it bridges saw logs fallen timber etc and completely annihilating portions of the road up the canyon probably the greatest damage wad at the top of the black dugway where the stream confined ain a narrow channel worked havoc with the old road some damage was done down in the narrows but even after a flood of that sort the road around the cliff is better than it ever was before according to men who have been working on the road very little damage was done to any of the new portions of the toad road thus demonstrating that they are located properly it is very fortunate that the new road in the vicinity of the blak dugway dagway is about completed otherwise it would have necessitated the expenditure of several hundred dollars on the old road to make it passable while the freshet delayed for a few days the completion of the auto road to the cedar breaks by taking out one or two bridges it did not cause the inconvenience and expense that it would have done had the new road been farther from completion it did however come very nearly costing the lives of some of the workmen several of whom lost their entire camp outfits sir mr john T and his little son otto who were camped on the bank of the creek with their forge and anvil for sharpening and repairing tools escaped by not more than ten seconds one on one oile side and the other on the other side of the creek only to see their camp swept away like so much mist A cry of leave the tents boys from lorin smith warned them and they rushed out without even their hats and saving noth ing except a table fork which one of them happened to have in his hand mr win richards who had just gone up to work was patting himself on the back for having got his tent pitched without his camp outfits getting wet when the torrent swept everything ciVery thing away tent bedding provisions and all others of the workmen suffered similar losses A large force men have gone up there this week and it is only a matter of a few days until travel can be resumed and within a very short time automobiles will be making the trip |
