Show ITHE THE NEGRO IN THE NORTH the writer of this article lais claim to northern extraction and southern experience hence competence and a disinterested interested d is judgment in dealing with sith this vexed veed american problem we wish ir cirit to state that the negro is out of his hia element among northern people because the north ern people do not understand the negro nature the north has always had a sentimental interest in the negro not a practical one he has been more an object of charitable experimenting than of practical d slings dealings as between man and man in spite ofa of a seeming equality both industrially and social the negro has haa never really assimilated with the northern people in limited numbers increased to the point of competition with his white brother all interest in his welfare has ceased except aade aa we have stated among the speculative philanthropists and it is perfectly natural that the north should fail to understand the negro nature the northern white man takes large stock in 10 such virtues as aa efficiency thoroughness etc to these roust must be added a wase sense of fair play and equity these ac countin large measure for the strong union sentiment among the workers of the north now all of these qualities are pure greek to the average negro he has it is 13 true a certain pride in efficiency and thoroughness a certain sense of fair play and equity but these are as different to these of the white man as moonlight is to sunlight in spite of his late bitter experience the negro neero has nevar yet been able to see sea why he be was waa not accepted as a man and a brother by the people of the north who for fifty years had professed to be his warm friends the difference between the northern and southern attitudes on this question ties lies entirety entirely in the point of view the northerner has persisted in regarding the negro as a fellow man who feho is entitled to the aade same consideration as himself the only trouble with this view is that it was a distant view unit and not a view at close quarters the southerner on the contrary knows him to be in nature of a younger suit and weaker brother who must not bead be ad and coune counseled led but if necessary restrained and controlled the late labor disputes in the north in ID which the negro played such guch a lamentable part serve to portray the negro character as nothing else has or can white men placed in the negroes mantion in thim cases would easily have a avoided ded friction that the negro suffered red was waa due not to the wrong attitude of his hia opponents but t to f his us own utter atter ignorance of the principles involved in his conduct add to this the white mans ignorance of the negro nature and the only surprise is that matters were not more serious than they were vi ith all his hia two centuries of civilization iza tion the negro excepting in rare instances is still a child in the school of civilized life like the normal child his wants wanta loom large on his mental vision and like the child also he can see no reason when h the opportunity presents itself for far ratifying gratifying those wants why he should out not do so now that the negro is coming into competition with northern labor it will be well for the northern people to gain a more correct knowledge of the negro nature the men who deliberately deliberate ty throw masses of negroes in competition with white laborers are with it it 0 an n utter tt e o disregard fort for the it a interests of both t h these claws classes of lab labor neither now understands the other at given time and opportunity to tc harmonize their view and arrive at a clear understanding tan ding of the rights of each their relation 1 will be a as plesant a aa they are and have always been in the south where each clam knows and thoroughly appreciates the good qualities of the other |
