H Hayward Open House Set An open house will be held July 19 at the Utah Power Light auditorium in American Fork from 2 to 5 pm p.m. for Martha Annice Hepworth Hayward Hayward Hayward Hay- Hay ward for her birthday Relatives and friends are in in- in invited SHE WAS born July 27 1875 in Salt Lake City to Joseph and Mary Ann Green Hepworth the third of 12 children She remembers watching the lamplighter who came at dusk with his ladder to climb each pole in the business district of Salt SaIl Lake City to light the lamps the dusty streets of summer and the muddy ones of winter the first board sidewalks sidewalks sidewalks side side- walks and cobblestone pavement pavement pavement pave pave- ment and the streetcars pulled by mules THE TilE FAMILY moved to West Bountiful when she was eight years old Winter trips to Salt Lake City were made in a wagon partly filled with straw with hot bricks or stones to help keep them warm It required required re re- re- re d all day to make the trip but the sights of the city made it all worthwhile She went event to a one room school house which required walking four miles along the railroad tracks The benches were crude and the big iron potbellied stove in the center of the room with the pipe running running running run run- ning clear across that was more often down than up She couldn't attend regularly as the tuition was per month per pupil She wryly states Then too my father did not of ofin in I t I rat l- l R MARTHA HAYWARD see the need of much tion He Ile felt that to read and write was enough I was a poor lazy student I used to draw pictures on my slate rather than study my tables to my sorrow now CLASSES were not graded as today One could be in grade in reading and 3rd grade in arithmetic That was her situation she could read well but spelling and arithmetic were hard for her The family moved to East Bountiful and school was some better beUer ACCORDING to custom at 16 she was put out to service for 2 a week She worked for Clarissa Williams sister of the Church president Joseph F. F Smith She tells of a humorous humor humor- ous incident of this time She had so wanted to be near Pres Smith and told Mrs Williams of her wish Mrs Williams arranged for her to come to the doorway of the dining room as dinner was being served She stood and looked over each guest for the long bearded president president president dent and when all aU had gone expressed her disappointment Mrs Williams laughed I HI should have told you My brother broth broth- er always tucks his napkin around his neck o 0 over v e r his beard ABOUT THIS TIllS time Martha Annice met Charles E. E Hayward Hayward Hayward Hay- Hay ward and their courtship consisted consisted consisted con con- of band concerts by John Held's Hells band at Liberty Park political meetings and meetings meetings meetings meet meet- ings in the Tabernacle across the street from the Williams home They were married Mar 8 1894 in the Salt Lake Temple Temple Temple Tem Tem- the year it was dedicated Charles was employed as a apostal apostal apostal postal carrier at the wage of a year They purchased a horse and buggy and now could ride in style to Bountiful to visit the doting grandparents of their first daughter This was more in style than when Charles rode his high bicycle to come to see her in their courting days THEY TilEY BOUGHT a place in Bountiful after their second child was born and he drove back and forth to Salt Lake to work In bad weather he stayed in town and came home week week- ends So to Martha Annice fell feU the farm chores She had to take the cow a couple of miles and chop a hole in the ice iceon iceon iceon on the pond for the animal to drink An orchard was planted and water was hauled in barrels barrels barrels bar bar- from a spring in Centerville Centerville Center- Center ville and each newly planted tree received a bucketful a week IN 1905 THEY were awarded a gold medal and 40 for bottled bottled bottled bot bot- fruit displayed in the State Fair In 1922 they moved to Spanish Spanish Spanish Span Span- ish Fork then to Burley Ida and finally to American Fork where he died July 12 1933 of meningitis THAT SAME year she went to work at State Training School as a matron and was there ten years She has belonged to Relief Society since 1901 and has worked in all the other church organizations She has made many quilts pillowcases and many crocheted and knitted articles and rugs MRS HA HAYWARD ARD lives at West Main American Fork with a companion Doris Tanner Tan Tan- ner She had 13 children 12 of whom lived to maturity A daughter Martha died as a achild achild achild child Ray in 1960 and Bryan in 1968 Her children are Mrs Mary Dalton Mrs Elwyn Margaret and Mrs David Ida Wagstaff American Fork Mrs Thayne Louise Bateman Alpine Alpine Alpine Al Al- pine Mrs Byron E.
