Show U. C FIRST AID The Utah Copper Company has not allowed the curtailment of production to interfere with its vigorous program of accident prevention. The open-pit mine of the Utah ! Copper Company in Bingham Canyon, Can-yon, Utah, 26 miles from Salt Lake City, is the largest operation of its kind in the country. At this mine a maximum of 141,586 tons of ore and waste has been moved within 24 hours. The magnitude of the operation opera-tion can best be visualized when we consider that the mine consists of -23 surface levels and requires 85 miles of standard gage railroad in its operation. oper-ation. In forwarding its noteworthy achievements this mine has not neglected ne-glected safety work, which has more than kept pace with production. The Utah Copper Company is one of the most progressive organization in the country with respect to both factors. As of Dec. 1, 1931, the mine had worked more than 1 1,000,000 man-hours man-hours without a fatality. The last fatality fa-tality occurred on January 21, 1929. The production for this period, from January 21, 1929, to Dec. I, 1931, was in excess to 75,200,000 tons of. ore and waste. The year 1930 is the first in the history of the mine in which no fatality has occurred. The fatalities have dropped from five in both 1923 and 1924 to no fatality fa-tality in 1930. and the days lost (6,000 per fatality) have been reduced re-duced from 30,000 days from fatalities fatal-ities for each of those two years to zero for 1930. Attention is also directed to the marked decrease in both frequency and severity rates. The drilling and blasting department depart-ment at the open-pit mine has estab- lished a record worthy of consideration considera-tion and emulation; it has completed 16 months' operation without an accident ac-cident and without an hour of lost time due to an injury. During this period 270,468 man-hours of work were performed by this department, in which time they drilled and blasted 18,700,000 tons of rock. To produce this tonnage more than 2,000,000 pounds of explosives were used. The three depigments having the Continued on page 10 |
