Show THE COUNTY SEAT QUESTION AS IT REALLY IS since the matter ot the removal ot tle county seat has come up for the condid ration of tir voter at the coming election several passages at arm have oc corred between THE PARK and a writer in the times THE RECORD article 1 ave contended for the county seat a removal to city whilst the writer in the times has contended ter the retention of the county seat at coath ille without ind algine in 41 operation ration or abuse we shall content ourselves in the assertion gunj fal ladou set forth by the writer the coalville Co alville times under late of october ard 3rd cm tl e times w anter undertakes to ton vey the impression impresa ion that the location of cart city would not be so convenient tor the people of summit county who hae business to transact la tie court as is the present bite at coalville Co alville however the only sh otting he made in the matter is his unsupported as er tion now let us look into the true elate ot affairs and disi asa on abely and see what are the facts in alie first i lace 1 ark city is much more centrally located considered from a stand point of population park city is nearly the center of population of sum mit county the actual center is about two miles north oti ark city a northerly line and tor the benefit of those who w iba 0 o arrive at the real truth of the matter we quote rom the census of 1900 according to the census the copula tion of the various precincts in the southern part of the county in all cases are much nearer to park city than to coalville Co alville lark rockfort rockport Rock port leoa kamas marion oakley goodland tibee make a total of 2 W or a little over 24 per cent of tho total population of summit in tl e i above enumerated it is indisputable that hardly a day cassea but w hat there are people from nearly all of those precincts alo have business in park city nd the case 13 exceptionally rare wl ere any of the 24 per amt of 11 e people enumerated have any business whatsoever in coalville Co alville furthermore the distance to collvile Coal vile said precincts will averlee nearly of the distance brorn these precinct to 1 ark cit none of alie precincts enumerated are connected by railway with either coalville Co alville or park cita and it would be greatly to tl e convenience ot all the residents of those precincts to have the county seat re moved to park cit in addition to the 24 per cent of the population contained in these precincts park city a population was in 1900 which makes up more than 70 per nt of a 1 the population of summit county admitting that all the re identa north of the south line of vi anshie are nearer to coalville Co alville than park city it eaves less than 30 per cent of the all in who by leaving the county seat retained at coalville Co alville 1 e figures above given are of the census camj ailed in 1900 since bat time the section of summit county north of the south line at 1 lias ost fully of its former population whilst park city haa g lined more than residents during that time that at present it is sate to state that but about 20 per cent of the population of summit county resides north of the bouth line ot anshie the precincts above referred to as ly ing north of t ie anshie line are coalville Co alville castle rock aco aplon echo anshie II enefer in all 2821 if from this number we subtract the loss in population above stated which can be safely set donn at since the census was compiled in 1900 it leaves but 2471 residents north of the south line of anshie township with people residing in park city aej vicinity the people north of wan el ip township reside near the line ol 01 alie U P railway aej with the exception of the residing at arten the others bouli find but little n ence in coming to park city of getting off at coalville Co alville the aittia tion summed up en this count is as allows by moving the county beat to lark city you malo it more convenient tor and you make it less convenient or about 1200 people tie times ener admits that three fourth of tie juror are drawn from city but elabee that most ot them are excused before all the jurors are obi bed to go to tl e county court room before being ex aused tl e mileage coee winch are tie greater part of jury eisensee leaie to be laid the bame ft i they lial lie burti er aver that ll 11 e saving of the entire excene of jurors fees and fees would require about CO bearg to buila alie court house that tt e whole cost of district court jurors and witness fees for tl e baat year to 1800 and that tl e detate fays part of that aum ium the financial statement of county tor tie fiscal year june 1902 long jurors and witness fi ea or tl at ear 1 15 ll 11 e amounts tor juror and witness fees due detate ebann in same statement 5 assuming that tr e 47 55 be came due from slate during that year it would leave tl e amount of 1 GO to be ifrid by the county if buth eum was annually it would build tl e reposed court kuae and jail in a little more than one third of izy bearg and when it ie that the of court tor tic year quoted wag very hi t it will read ly be seen that even lese time would be required to euf focient to build the new court the aimee writer burti cr undertakes to belittle tt e claims of bark city beine entitled to tl county ecat because of he fact that it pay most of the taboa and is th largest city in the county etc but despite his illogical compari on all people nith the facts in ilia case know eliat lark cit claine are well founded and are worthy tl e consideration of all the voters of summit county tt e earnal of tl a may yet cause ll 11 e loot afie united state to advocate dvo cate the removal 0 t hii i to some elior city car am it is that such agitation would now ie under way were the capitol buil ling tt no aelter suited to meet ll 11 e requirements of government tl an la hie court house at coalville Co alville the times writer furthermore claims that the court house is good enough let us eee how far his claim will bear inspection tl e intent of the law is that all comity kofl should have their offices in the county court 1 oue at present there are two county officials ft ho have eccli office at the county court house and these two occupy all tl e available space tl at alie court house alfords the other officials who sl 1 ave their offices in the court 1 ouse are the treasurer and sheriff as welles tie county attorney besides the spice now occupied there are two ainey little rooms neither of which would be fit for any to occupy burti it is doubtful it a county treasurer be found w ho would be willing to take chances on bavine his office at the present court bouse in sequence of its isolated position tl e present robbi reserved for tie third district court is not what it should be or a county of ll 11 e size and the wealth of summit county the cia n room 11 too small and the jury room is but a poor excuse of a ury room whilst tin judge s room is in no ways fitted for oc cu pation by the judge and summit county be willing to furnish bet ter quarters for the district court in relation to the item of repairs of only ft 95 expended on tl e court 1 bouso during tl e last year as all tl e people of summit bounty have veil understood that an effort would be made tl is fall to remove tl e county seat to lark city and pending the outcome of this effort is it net reasonable to assume that tt e county commissioners refrained from exendine ex ending anything except what absolutely necessary on tl e court house the court 1 bouso certainly needed much more repairing s to the jail if as tl e times writer avers the tail is safe place for prisoners why is it that ans boners have so often escaped from it and why is it eliat tl e henn I 1 as 1 eld prisoners at I 1 ark cit rather than tale the cl ances of their getting out ot jail at or of incurring additional et pense by hiring a night watchman to guard tl em as such measure is nece ear tor their eatery and sate keepin when they are held at the present coun in connection with tl e cages let us mention that no one would be so ichu man as to lock a man in those cages with tl e chances of his being burned alive el the court house catch fire as in such case it would be burned to the ground before the people of coalville Co alville could do anything to reecie the prisoner as there is not a residence within 1 ailing distance of the present isolated structure known as the county court house PARK CITY 8 TAT 1 the great mines of park city are as eissed for
