Show dDIbfittimairies ' Jack J. Busio Jack Joseph Busio, a long-time Park City resident and miner, died on Aug. 20 of natural causes. He was 87. He was born July 24, 1897 to Frank and Mande Butkovich, in Bilaj, Croatia, Yugoslavia. Living conditions were poor in the country, so in 1914 he came to the United States, recalled Busio's son Mike. He joined his sister in Pueblo, Colorado. Busio took a job for the Chicago Fuel and Iron Company, where he worked 12 hours a day for low wages. According to Mike, a friend told him about Park City. A miner was paid $2.25 a day, only had to work 10 hours, and had two days off a year Christmas and Fourth of July. That sounded like a better deal, said Mike. So in 1915, Jack Busio moved to Park City. He married Rose Frkovich on May 29, 1921 in St. Mary's Catholic Church. The family lived in Aberdeen, Washington from 1925 to 1927 and Mike was born there. "But my mother didn't like the rain for 300 days a year," he said. The family moved back. Since 1927, they have lived at the same address, 297 Daly Avenue. For 60 years Jack was a Mine Motorman, hauling ore and other waste material out of the mines. He was a member of Croatian Fraternal Union 433, which once totaled 500 members from the Park City area. Mike Busio said his mother is the last survivor of the group. Jack was also a member of the Catholic Church and Park City Senior Citizens. He loved gardening and outdoor work. Mike said his father hated the hard times after 1950 "when the city was practically a ghost town." Jack did not mind the recent changes. One regret he had, however, were the escalating property taxes that made it difficult for the old-time residents to live on fixed incomes, Mike said. Jack Busio is survived by his wife, of Park City; children Mrs. Martin (Mary) Elich, Tooele; Katherine and Michael J. Busio of Park City; Mrs. Madelyn Ross and Mrs. Ernest F. (Helen) Lloyd, both of Salt Lake; and a brother, Mike, of Bilaj, Yugoslavia. A Requiem Mass is scheduled for Thursday, 10 a.m., at St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church in Park City. Rosary was recited Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. Friends may call prior to the service. Burial will be in Park City Cemetery. |
