Out-of-towners net wins in Irfckoff of Rocky Mountain Soccer Tournament Jim Smedley Players from the University of Utah (foreground) and Ogden scrap for the ball. m by JIM SMEDLEY Record staff writer The Orem men's team and a female Ogden squad captured the titles in their respective divisions Sunday at the Park City High School field in the first annual Rocky Mountain Soccer Tournament. Six men's teams were divided into two divisions and four women's teams comprised one division in this round-robin tournament. The men's and women's teams from Aspen, Colo. , were the only out-of-state entrants in the chase for the title. But the men lost their championship bid in two short sudden-death periods against Orem Sunday and the women were edged 2-1 in a shootout with a formidable Ogden opponent. Orem tied Aspen 2-2 and beat United Z 2-0 Saturday. A tiebreaker was needed to determine who . would play Murray, which had won its division with a 2-0 victory over Park City and a 5-3 thumping of the Invaders of Salt Lake City. The 8 a.m. Sunday tiebreaker was a little too much for the Aspen men's team to handle, according to coach Dick "Tennessee" Klausner. "We were just too hurig over from the party Saturday night. Our goalie couldn't see and many of the guys didn't get in until 4 or 5 a.m.," Klausner said. "Our old motto of 'bop till you drop,' did us in." Aspen did recover enough to beat Park City 4-0 later in the day to finish in third place. Arturo Jimenez was the offensive star for the Orem team, scoring four of its 13 total goals. He scored the tying goal against Aspen after his teammate Martin Cuevas kicked the first. Jimenez also scored both of Orem's points in the shutout of United Z. Greg Tobler also netted four goals for Orem. Two came in the shortened tiebreaker with Aspen and two in the championship game against Murray. Orem goalie Coleman Barney allowed allow-ed only two goals in three games and a tiebreaker. . Orem is in the main division of the Utah Soccer League and had been playing its best ball of the year prior to the tournament. "We had a bad first half of the year as we were tied for 10 th in the fall," said team spokesman Julio Rodriquez. "But in the spring and summer, we had the third-best record in the league." Murray spokesman Steve Adams said his team was just not ready to play Orem in the championship game and had trouble putting its passing game together. . In women's action, two teams could not have been more evenly matched than Ogden and Aspen. Both teams shut out Park City, both defeated the University of Utah team by one goal and they tied in their game. Ogden has been the dominant women's team in the Northern Utah Soccer Association in the past four years. In that time, the team has lost only one league game (this year to Weber State University) and one non-league game, three years ago to Park City. Not bad for a team average age is over 30, according to player-coach Linda Izatt. Ogden's offensive star was Christy Gleave, who scored three of the team's six total goals and had an assist on another. Ann Johns scored two goals for Ogden while Shelly Roberts added the other regular play goal. The biggest goal of the series came off the foot of Johns in the shootout to decide the champion ship. Each team had five shots on goal. Aspen could manage only one goal by Sabina Nunn. Ogden's Cindy Carlson scored the first goal for her team and Johns followed with the game-winner. Kaye Lynn Terry was a rock in playing goalie for Ogden, allowing only three goals in three games. The Ogden team praised the play of the Park City women's team, which they beat Sunday 2-0. Both of Ogden's scores came during the final five minutes of the game. Visiting team players said they enjoyed the tournament, praised its organization by Park City Silver Kicks coach Garry Moore and anticipated returning for next year's match. |
