Show Youth prevails in rugby opener The sixteenth' 'annual Park City i rugby campaign kicked off Saturday with the Muckers matched against a solid Highland High side. This was i Highland's final union match in a spring schedule which saw the school reach an 8-2-1 record against largely club competition and became the third seed in the National High School Rugby Playoffs slated for this weekend in Washington, D.C. Park City moved to leads of 3-0, 7-6, 13-9 on the strength of tries by Martin Corps and Zuke Garceau, but youth was served in the end when Highland scored twice in the final six minutes to prevail 19-13. . "It felt sort of strange out there playing against kids half your age," commented one Mucker, "But they were fit and had great technique and were a good opponent for our season opener." Park City prevailed in the second run, besting Highland's Seconds 7-0, with Steve Simchen crossing the line for the Muckers. "The way I look at it," said coach Dave Mueller, "Highland can have their season-ending win to give them momentum in their try for a national title. But we came down here for a serious scrimmage, got quite a few new people into the lineup and played many of our veterans in new spots. It was fun and we won the day, 20-19." The Muckers will be tested again ' this weekend when they travel to Salt Lake to play perennial rival, Stfhivershyy 'WCtaf lrh Mocker-' Utah series has seen plenty of evenly played, high-paced matches in the past several years. Last year the teams played to a 3-3 draw. There is speculation the University insisted on moving the 1985 game up one week from the traditional Memorial Day weekend so that the Utes could catch the Muckers before they had hit full stretch. The Muckers, for their part, showed against Highland that they are capable of playing fine rugby from the beginning of the season, Mueller said. "A few rough spots remain, mainly in the lineout and in defense. Look for many more points than were scored last season." Kickoff is 1 p.m. at the East Field on the University Campus. |
