Show Alamo b-ball play dribbles to a close It was a fitting ending to the Alamo Beer & Basketball League. The Tanqueray Tonics and the Barbarians were tied for the championship going into the final game Dec. 23. The Tonics were pitted against the always dangerous Reilly's All-Stars and the Barbarians had to face the Church of What's Happening Hap-pening Now Bears. The stage was set for the league championship. The only problem was that only one full team showed up of the six teams scheduled to play. In the first game, Reilly's had four of its finest ready to play, but there were only two Tonics. League organizer Keith Brons-tein Brons-tein was ready to give the All-Stars All-Stars the win by forfeit, but then the "always dry" All-Stars learned learn-ed that no free beer was to be had if the game was forfeited. So they decided to donate a player to the Tonics for a game. According to league rules, the winning team gets three pitchers of beer and the losing team gets one pitcher at the Alamo Saloon after each game. Bronstein was a little hesitant at first, but he said if the game was played full-court, the winners win-ners could have the beer. So captain Rich Reilly, in his benevolence, gave the Tonics his leading scorer, Rick "who can leap tall buildings with a single bound" Miller. Needless to say, Miller's team won the game. In the second game, the Burnt Oranges and the A Team failed to show, so they were both given a half loss and a half win. In the final game of the evening, even-ing, the Barbarians fielded a full team. However, the Bears were a little short. All the ringers emptied emp-tied from the Alamo and joined forces to thrash the Barbarians 30-23. So the league championship is in doubt. Bronstein is expected to make a ruling on the evening's events sometime before next September. The weekly Beer & Basketball show will be broadcast on KPCW FM-92 Dec. 27 at 7:45 p.m. and Dec. 28 at 12:25 a.m. They may know what's going on by then. |
