Show Discuss Local College Proposal At the regular dinner meeting meeting meeting meet meet- ing of the Kaysville Rotary club held Wednesday evening at Davis High School Layton Rotarians were special guests of the Kaysville Maysville club CIVIC AND government leaders leaders leaders lead lead- ers numbered ISO in attendance attendance attend attend- ance for a special meeting called to discuss the proposal of a junior college to be lo located located located lo- lo in Davis County In attendance were six of the county's seven legislators who spoke po e during the evening on the need of a sup state ported two two- year two ear institution tobe tobe to tobe be located in the county REP FRANK Knowlton R- R Layton said with the county county rapidly growing and progress taking place in the near future future fu future fu- fu ture there will be a much needed college in this area The population of Davis County Coun Coun- ty currently stands at about and by 1980 it should reach reach- a top of Mr l Knowlton stated that there has been much talk of this proposed junior college issue in the past but no action He said the bill was defeated when presented in the last legislative session Representative Dean Hill R- R Bountiful said that by having a college in this area are area it woUld hot be oe rep repeating any anything any anything anything thing offered by any of theother theother the theother other area schools It would provide technical training for persons desiring to learn a trade It would also decrease the over-crowded over conditions in other larger schools near nearl Davis County At the present time there are no state supported supported supported sup sup- ported institutions in Davis County and the tax money is not being spent to assist in supporting county residents he pointed out BOTH Senators Ezra Clark and Haven J. J Barlow who is also senate president said that a junior college program is not likely to be approved inthe inthe in inthe the upcoming legislative session session session ses ses- sion but if the ground work is laid now the proposal would probably have top priority in next years year's session Senator Clark proposed that Davis County legislators should join together with Salt Lake County's delegation in working toward the idea of having I two junior colleges college at the same I time one in the Salt Lake area and one in Davis County SENATOR BARLOW said he thought that two or three possible possible possible pos pos- sible sites should be included in the proposal when presented to the Legislature to give it- it more importance Some of the leaders however said they feel that where a college is to be located I should be decided later after the groundwork proving that it is necessary for the county county county coun coun- ty to have a junior college in inthe inthe inthe the area has been laid |
