Show Historic District Commission Meets Demolition Permit Denied vacant lot on the other side of The Black Pearl and the parking lot on the other side of the street, along with the current location of The Park Record and the adjoining building to the North. The color of the brick to be used in the building of the Silver Queen Hotel, located right next to 614 Main Street was discussed having been forwarded to the Commission Commis-sion by the Planning Commission. Com-mission. After a discussion between dark brown brick versus light brown, the Commission agreed with the builder the lighter would be better so as to minimize the size of the building. In the only other business before the group, the Commissioners Com-missioners discussed the new form which the Planning Commission is drawing up and made suggestions so that future building would conform to the historical guidelines the Commission is attempting to set. A discussion of those specific guidelines was tabled until the next meeting of the group. The Historic District Commission, Com-mission, meeting last Wednesday, Wed-nesday, set something of a I precedent when they denied a demolition permit for a t building they felt had historical histor-ical significance on Main Street. The building in question is 1 located at 509 Main Street and has served in recent times as the Sheriff's Office. Fire Marshall, Herb John-t John-t son, had requested that it be demolished, stating he con- sidered it a fire hazard. After investigation of the assertion, the Commission found the building to be t within the safety standards for fire regulations and, moreover, a building of some historical note. They there- fore denied the request. The building's future is now in question, but it will not be J razed. In the second item of business before the Commis- sion, the Silver Mill Project was discussed at length. Mike Doilney presented the current status of the project in something akin to a progress report. The Com- mission found nothing to object to in the way in which Doilney and his associates J were proceeding with the planned development and officially approved what had been done so far to imple- ment the proposed rebuild- ing of that area of both the east and west sides. of Main bounded approximately by ; the Egyptian Theater and the |
