Mary's goal is to have her own designs to show by the next Arts Festival. "And with the slow start of our season this year, I should have lots of time to work in that direction," she laughed. "That's where all my energy will be going." Lots of her energy has already gone toward expanding expand-ing the service and sales of her business. She offers a complete picture framing facility with two custom designers to frame your every picture. She has a fine gallery of local -artists' creations; everything from watercolors to hand-carved turkey eggs to sculpture to scrimshaw. Whatever your gift-giving or self-indulgent needs, a little trip to The Family Jewels would do you good. Especially if it happens to be vour birthday. Starting in A recipe for success must include goals, stamina, imagination and an awareness aware-ness of the environment surrounding you. Mary Doty of The Family Jewels has all these qualities, plus an added bonus: as of October 1st of this year, she is the sole owner of a flourishing business that adds a little sparkle to Park City life. "I've always been very business-oriented," Mary explained. "When I first came to Park City ten years ago, I was active as a real estate agent and I still keep my license current. I also managed The Forge, a bar that used to exist in the lobby of the Claimjumper. Then I managed a youth hostel (affectionately called The Palace Flophouse) which was in the Miner's Hospital." Mary lived in the old hospital for 4 or 5 years, occassionally leaving Park City to go adventuring. On one of her trips, she met the man who was to become her partner in a small but enterprising jewelry business. Mary and Dick traveled to Taos, New Mexico where they began dealing in Indian jewelry -silver and turquoise. The rooms of the Miner's Hospital Hospi-tal became filled with beads . and employees, stringing away, sending the resulting creations out across the country on a wholesaling two weeks, Mary will be giving away a creation made of garnet, the birthstone for January. Those of us born in December will have a long wait for our chance at some turquoise, but it will be worth waiting for. In the meantime, Mary has arranged ar-ranged with local artists Dawna Barton and Jim Telford to do shows for her this year; she also commissioned commis-sioned Jim Ford to create a Park City Poster - his fourth in a series of ski town posters. Thanks for that added sparkle in our lives, Mary, and here's wishing you good fortune and a bit of sparkle for yourself! basis. Having nurtured the enterprise enter-prise from its beginnings in Indian stones to its handling of fine gems and diamonds, she has increased her knowledge and skills through intensive training.
