Show Hhige Festival Termed. Giant Success !: """VV ( .rt - -. ;x T Mil fvw .h-hX : nl.; J Sweet Adelines XAtrr. -lam.- .-. Main Street Saturday and Sunday pulsated with activity activ-ity as thousands and thousands thou-sands of art enthusiasts attended Park City's 10th Annual Arts Festival, termed by Main Street merchants and local residents as the best arts festival this town has ever had. It was estimated that approximately " 300,000 people attended the Festival Saturoay and Sunday. - Even before the festival officially opened at 1 1 a.m. Saturday, Main Street was bustling with serious art shoppers and interested onlookers. on-lookers. And Mother Nature couldn't have been more cooperative, drenching the huge crowd with two sun-filled sun-filled days, although the temperatures hovered in the 90's. Arts Festival Director Tina Lewis said she thought the festival was "an astounding success , ' ' particularly for the artists, craftsmen and performers per-formers on Main Street. "I would estimate we had some artists, who made well over $10,000," said Mrs. Lewis. "The artists were estatic about the whole thing. They loved the festival festi-val and all of them want to come back." There seemed to be an even larger crowd this year than in years past, she added, but more importantly, important-ly, there was a different type of crowd. "I didn't necessarily want more people," the director pointed out. ''What I was interested in was the difference differ-ence in the crowd. These were people who wanted to buy, and most people spent all day here." Tina Lewis added artists up and down Main Street reported brisk sales, both Saturday and Sunday. One , exhibitor completely sold out of work on display after the first day of the festival. "The reaction (from the artists) was unanimous," Tina Lewis said. Main Street merchants told The Record they exper; ienced record-breaking sales during the festival." Dick Doty, owner of The Family Jewels.at the bottom of Main Street,' said many of his customers bought very expensive ex-pensive items and that this was a more prosperous festival than any previous arts festival here. "Our shop was absolutely packed," Doty said. "It was the busiest two days we've ever had." Dolly Makoff , owner of Dolly's Book Store, said she did "very well" in terms of sales, and she praised this year's organization of the festival. ' "It was a quality function,'' func-tion,'' Mrs. Makoff said. "I would like to thank the executive committee for organizing or-ganizing a very well run, quality affair. The arts festival has been upgraded tremendously from our earlier earl-ier endeavors." "This year," she added, "not only did the committee do a good job, but we' ve, in a sense, graduated by taking knowledge from previous years of experience." And Carolyn Bloom of Bloom's on Main Street said she thought the festival went a lot smoother this year. "I thought it was great," she added. Bloom's was closed during the festival because, as Mrs. Bloom explained, "We just s couldn't handle staying in the store and trying to enjoy the festival." Art Durrant, owner of Main Street Hardward, said his business is always down during arts festivals here and this year was no exception. Exhibitor booths block people peo-ple from getting into the store, Mr. Durrante explained. ex-plained. Considering the large crowds both days, the possibility of crime is present, pre-sent, however Park City police officer Joe Offret, who was on duty Saturday and Sunday, reported everything went "very smooth," with only the usual alcohol related problems at night. Tina Lewis said all of the workshops preceeding the festival were well attended as well as the performances on Main Street both days of the festival. Mrs. Lewis was disappointed, though, in the attendance at the children's festival at city park. "The children's festival was not as well attended as we had hoped it would be. But the performances both evenings were well attended, especially the Utah Symphony." Sym-phony." It would seem an understatement under-statement to say that Park City's 10th Annual Arts Festival was a success. As one artist said this weekend, "We're in the big time now."
