I 116000 . lf?.'hX' 1 Merrill Walker A Dog's Best Friend Park City has a new animal control officer. Merrill Walker replaced re-placed Trisha Hansen and began work Monday. This is Walker's first job as an animal control officer, however he has had extensive experience training dogs in obedience schools. He has also trined guard dogs. Once a month, Walker holds obedience school at a park in Salt Lake. The new 24-year-old animal control officer said it was important impor-tant to immediately have good comeraderie with Park City residents. resi-dents. "I want to have a good rap port," he said. "I'll work with the people if they'll work with me." Born in Calgary, Alberta, Merrill Mer-rill Walker moved to the United States in 1967 and went to high school in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1973, he moved to Salt Lake and attended Utah Technical College where he received his Associates Degree in Business. While living in Canda, Walker raised Doberman Pinchers in his own kennel where, he said, he learned guard training. He added he has been around animals most of his life, having lived on a ranch in Canada for many years. Even in the short period of time he has been here, Walker said he has already seen many dogs on Main Street without leaches. After the dog's owner is warned a first time, the unleashed canine is then taken 10 a kennel in Salt Lake. If it is not claimed, the dog will be transferred to the humane society. A dog that is picked up off the street, though, that has a tag will be kept in ParkCity for 24 hours to give the owner time to claim it. Merrill Walker said he would eventually like to be apoliceman and that serving as an animal control con-trol officer is good training. "It's a good step into law enforcement," en-forcement," said Walker. |
