J EDGAR HOOVER FBI Director Millions of college students are returning to campuses throughout the country to begin begin begin be be- gin the fall semester They represent both the hope and the shape of the future FROM THE standpoint of educational opportunities and intelligence they are far better better better bet bet- ter equipped than any preceding preceding preceding pre pre- ceding generation to participate constructively in developing solutions to the many complex problems confronting our Na Na- tion It can be expected that most of these young people will fulfill fulfill fulfill ful ful- ful- ful fill the promise they represent to us In so doing they will join hands with the millions of Americans of good will who actively seek meaningful solutions solutions to our social life IF OUR joint progress in inthis inthis inthis this regard is impeded and deterred deterred deterred de de- de- de much of the trouble will come from a growing band of styled self-styled revolutionaries who are using college campuses campuses campuses cam cam- as a base for their destructive destructive destructive de de- activities This comparatively small group of arrogant hard-core hard m militants l tants have contempt for forthe forthe forthe the majority and our democratic democratic democratic demo demo- cratic processes They regard themselves as the nucleus of an elite dictatorial ruling class of the future v r THESE EXTREMISTS openly open open- l ly y avow that their aim is to overthrow the existing order Under the guise of academic freedom and freedom of speech they profess to seek seeka a dialog when actually what I they seek is a confrontation with established authority to I provoke disorder I Through these confrontations they expect to smash first I our educational structure then our economic system and I finally our government itself IT IS vitally important to recognize that these m militant l tant extremists are not simply faddists faddists fad fad- faddists or college kids at play Their cries for revolution I and their advocacy of guerrilla guerrilla guerrilla guer guer- rilla warfare evolve out of a pathological hatred for our way I of life and a determination to destroy it The workshops they hold on sabotage and 1 how haw to use it to further their objectives are grim forebodings forebodings forebodings I ings of serious intent THIS TillS NEW Left movement as it is known is growing both bothin in numbers and varied forms of violence Last spring major disorders precipitated by the revolutionary adherents of the movement occurred on a number of college campuses In the violent uprising at Columbia University m militant l tant students and outsiders took over several buildings and committed committed com com- committed senseless and deliberate destruction The incident triggered triggered triggered trig trig- similar disturbances on other campuses CHANGES MAY be necessary necessary necessary sary and improvements in any institution can be made but this is not the way to do it Encouraged by their success success success suc cess at Columbia the anarchists anarchists anarchists an an- in the New Left movement are boldly spreading spreading spread spread- ing the word that they intend to create two three many in the manner of one of their heroes Che Guevara the Cuban revolutionary revolutionary who cried create two three many Vietnams THE MAIN thrust of the New Left movement arises from the concerted efforts of the the- I Students for fora a Democratic S So- So Many of its members and some of its national leaders leaders lead lead- ers openly profess their faith in communist concepts and their determination to restructure restructure restructure re structure our society One of the militant spokesmen spokes spokes- men of this group stated for that 1 25 i I i universities linked to t I the movement would be too much for the police-for police the dominant dominant dominant dom dom- class and we would get what we demand THE TilE NEW Left leaders plan to launch a widespread i attack on educational institutions institutions institutions this fall They are relying relying rely rely- ing on collegiate dissidents and militants to bolster and accelerate accelerate accelerate ac ac- ac- ac this drive I It would be foolhardy for I educators public officials and law enforcement officers to ignore or dismiss lightly the I revolutionary terrorism invading invading in in- college campuses in-I in Itis It Itis Itis is a serious threat to both the academic community and anda a lawful and orderly society I |
