Show Miners Win ! The Park High Miners picked up their first win of the season List Friday, beating the Utah School for the Deaf. 44-38. Although pleased with the outcome. Coach Ron Steppan downplayed the victory and set his sights on upcoming contest with St. Joseph and Wcndover, w hich will determine the seeding for post-season tournament play. The loss to Park City left USD the only winless team in region nine. The team plays a normal schedule but is ineligible for post-season play. "Playing in actual competition is the best experience these handicapped kids can have, but I'm not too impressed with beating them," said Steppan. "We got up 14 points, then put in the JV's." USD didn't take their loss for granted, however. They came out strong and lead the Miners 16-8 at the end of the first quarter. But Park City bounced back in the second quarter to lead 22-18 at the half and the team was in . control for the rest of the game. Mike Alvey was high scorer for the Miners with 14 points. This Friday's contest against Wcndover, the last home game of the regular season, is an important game for the Miners, said Steppan. If Park City, (1-6) beats Wendover (3-4) and finishes the regular season with a win against St. Joseph the following Friday, they could tie Wendover for fourth place with equal 3-6 records. A play-off game would then determine who played the second-place finisher in division 1 and who would play the third-place third-place finisher in the round-robin tournament. Under the round-robin system, the first place teams in each division play each other for the region championship and the other teams are seeded across divisions. Second place in division one plays fifth place in division two, the third and fourth place finishers play each other, and visa versa. Wendover plays first place Dugway in their closing game, so the Miners have a good chance for a higher seed if they win Friday. Friday's game will also feature a special half-time march to honor senior cheerleaders and members of the drill team.
